RANT~Soo I applied at the on base salon, ONYX. I have been overseas for years and thought I would be able to return home to an on base salon. I was told I was qualified they just thought someone else "fit" better??!!
I called HR for Gino Morena enterprisesLLC.

I am licensed in the State of CA (6yrs) graduated in temecula at the Paul Mitchell school, lived in the USMC community giving my services, Hair, MUA, photography for 13 years now. Not to mention being an opening stylist for the brand new BX in Okinawa Japan. Only to return home after leaving my career (again) to find out spouses are not favored on base AND even with ALL the qualifications cannot get a position.
Now I don't want to hit below the belt, but have you seen the manager there??/ Well apparently I didn't reach her standards..hahaha..that is hilarious.
So if a PAUL MITCHELL focused salon ON A USMC base doesn't hire you because your qualified, and not bad lookin' with an extended education...what would you call that? UNEQUAL OPPORTUNITY.
The interviewer didn't even interview me! OR watch me style the spouse i brought for the cut and style. I was told "we will call you." SERIOUSLY..haha I CALLED BACK..Never got to even meet THE HIRING MANAGER, my CAREER AND LIVELY HOOD was left up to some stylist who has SERIOUS CONFIDENCE ISSUES..just go in and look for yourselve's...so upset..i have been gone for almost 4 years with my military family and this is what i come home to..they didn't even offer me a barber position :/

So my question is, is it legal to open your own home salon on base? I do have a CA business License..Where should I go from here...

laneys mommy --- 11 years ago -

As far as I know you can't run a business out of a home on base. But I do know some ladies who have done hair at home. Never seen anyone advertise though. Probably more word of mouth.

BlueBettas --- 11 years ago -

I feel your pain. While being stuck in 29 Palms I've applied to countless jobs on base, and not getting any position. A couple positions I applied for involved the movie theater, and it stated in the job position knowing how to run projectors was a plus. I have 2.5 years experience working at a theater, was a relief manager, and ran the projectors. You can't tell me there were many people with experience running those old fashioned film projectors who applied. They never contacted me about the positions.

I would start by talking to the Board of Equalization, Since you have to have a business license with the address of your home through them anyway for a home business, they should be able to answer your questions on if you can even do a home salon business or not and if so what to do to make it happen.

Granted, I guess there's nothing stopping you from doing everything under the table either.

I know how many spouses are hairstylist's, and how much we depend on client's. When you constantly have to move with your family you have to start over. I just think it's wrong so many of us have to start ALL over and the Base Salon's do not give us preference or even equal opportunity.

I heard 29 palm is bare also off base, I'm hoping I find a salon off base that will give me a chance without client's, so I Can begin my word of mouth.
Living on base it just makes sense to be able to direct your neighbors and new friends to the BASE SALON. I'm just not ok with the experience...

sweetcheeks --- 11 years ago -

What about traveling to people in their home?

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

I just have to find out the legalities of on base business's? I guess I could stop by legal

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

Also feel free to post any kind of experience with the Salon as well...They need more traffic I don't mind helping ;)

shizzlemydizzle --- 11 years ago -

How do you know another spouse didn't get the job?

And as far as someone else being a "better fit", perhaps your personality would be an issue to the other stylists.

Just because you have all the qualifications doesn't mean you automatically get the job.

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

How would that be determined and WHO did the determining NIKKI.. My personality is the only thing you can come up with! A hairstylist with my credentials HAS ALREADY PROVEN MY ABILITIES AND PERSONALITY.. that isn't your place, Keep TALKING

Actually your both wrong! If it isn't a privately ran business there is equal opportunity rights. So me fitting in has nothing to do with eligibility..THAT'S THE POINT

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

Open call. Positions bringing superior advantages should be open to all applicants;[17] job openings should be publicized in advance giving applicants a "reasonable opportunity" to apply. Further, all applications should be accepted.[3]
Fair judging. Applications should be judged on their merits[3] with procedures designed to identify those best-qualified.[17] The evaluation of the applicant should be in accord with the duties of the position; for example, for the job opening of choir director, the evaluation may judge applicants based on musical knowledge rather than some arbitrary criterion such as hair color.[3]
An application is chosen. The applicant judged as "most qualified" is offered the position while others are not. There is agreement that the result of the process is again unequal, in the sense that one person has the position while another does not, but that this outcome is deemed fair on procedural grounds.

shizzlemydizzle --- 11 years ago -

Yes, fitting in DOES have to do with eligibility. If a new employee is going to disrupt the atmosphere in a place of business, then they aren't going to be there very long, if hired at all.

And who in hades is NIKKI?

How do you know someone else didn't have just as much training as you?

Get over it, you're not going to get every position you apply for.

Quite frankly, if your behavior here is any indication of how you went into the interview, I wouldn't have hired you either.

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

to ShizzlemyDizzle~What behavior are you talking about? Stating facts? It says above Nikki is the character judge..just like you, people in AMERICA earn their positions by WORK & being FAIR AND JUST and in the Industry in which we are speaking PROFESSIONALISM. GO IN TO THE SALON AND CHECK MY JUDGE OUT..Then come talk to me..How in the world would an experienced person with wisdom and knowledge disrupt the "atmosphere"

Rainbow Dancer --- 11 years ago -

Very True!! Grant it my occupational field (I'm financial analyst) is not near the stated field (you're a hair stylist) in this thread, ones personality could determine whether the candidate would be a fit for the office or not.

For instance, just a few weeks ago I had to pre-screen resumes. One of the resumes I came across was well qualified for the position to be filled, in fact, more qualified than I was. This person had a Masters in Business and Accounting so of course I called them to come in for an interview. During the interview process we knew his creditably could be a huge asset to our company, however, his personality would honestly be too disruptive for other people in the office. As much as I would've loved to hire him, unfortunately, others felt that he would've be a potential risk while in a meeting.

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

keep in mind this is a commission position, if someone has a better anything they make more. I don't think a "winning associate" would care if she stays in "the top spot" It's all about "being better." I don't get into salon drama I just do what I do. I have a great past with return clients and my fellow stylist. So i do understand where your coming from. Im also a few years older, so I really do understand the importance of self qualification "vs' competition. The point is~I was not Even given a chance.even if it was to prove my abilities of distraction or lack of personality. Its very apparent.

alwaysright --- 11 years ago -

With your attitude I am glad they didn't hire you. You have NO WAY of knowing whether the person they hired was better qualified than you or a spouse for that matter. Pull up your big girl panties and move on with your life.

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

Always Right ~
you must be involved..What i said is THEY (onyX) are online as A PAUL MITCHELL salon,(look them up) MILITARY service, WHICH IS WHY I thought I would be ok with putting my career back together after servicing the military community overseas for years. That is what I have done , and will continue to do,that is my exact resume..you should highlight the attitude instead of pointing it out..

PrettyInPink --- 11 years ago -

This is stupid. Your not going to get every job you apply for, and maybe you are really qualified for the position, but I'm sure your not the ONLY person in Oceanside that would be qualified for the position. Whoever they hired must have been more qualified than you. This economy sucks, it was one opening and probably tons of applicants, not everyone can get the job. Look for something else and move on.

AnonyMISS --- 11 years ago -

Hey, OP...

getting on here and ranting about a job you didn't get, and even putting the business name out there is extremely immature and a true example of your character. If I were the hiring manager, it would seem that I made the correct decision in not hiring you. Re evaluate your professionalism. Good luck!

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

THERE ARE 2 SALONS on base. We are a community, I know for A FACT I was not hired for a personal reason, that is why i am posting my first underground rant ever..I know all about getting a professional response to not being hired..saying "we will keep your resume". I had to call HR in SF to even get the hiring manager to speak to me. She never met me or saw me. EVERYTHING was based on what ONE GIRL "said" The person that said I wasn't good enough, is NO BETTER THAN ME(qualifications)..
I NEVER SAID the STYLIST chosen by the HIRING MANAGER WAS LESS QUALIFIED,
I said I never even got a chance, and i know i'm at LEAST good enough for a proper chance with the main interviewer. I said the person in which i was directly involved with played several games and run's our on base salon unprofessionally..period... So please read what i wrote.

News Flash: Employers are allowed to hire or not hire someone for personal reasons. Such as your personality sucks, or you weren't professional enough. They can even refuse to hire you if they think you may be over qualified for the position. Employers don't have to hire just based on qualifications and how good someone thinks they may be at their job. They get to pick someone who they think will fit in well with the other employees and clientele. For whatever reason *I am sure we can all guess which one/s* they didn't think you were the right fit for their business regardless of your "qualifications". Now suck it up and stop whining

YouReallyThinkSo --- 11 years ago -

Be glad you didnt get it. The salon sucks. I went once and will never step foot in there again. The girl who did my hair ruined it. After a fresh cut my hair was covered in split ends because she kept using a straightener that was ripping my hair even after I asked her to stop. I finally couldnt take it anymore and just stood up which in turn caused me to get a burn on my shoulder. She said I needed to sit down so she could finish straightening to make sure she cut it straight. I was not sitting back in that chair. The cut wasnt straight and the part that she did straighten the ends where all split from being ripped by the straightener. Worst experience ever.

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -

Always Right!!! Hi and thanks for your kind words about my employment search on base! I am most definitely~Sucking my opinion up~
Pulling my "panties" up and stopping the whining, i don't need to get the job i have busted my tail for!! After all I am one of poor character...:)

YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME TO BE A BETTER PERSON
funny funny.

I have read reviews, & was there when a stylist butchered a little boys hair, & blamed it on Paul Mitchell clippers..lol

shizzlemydizzle --- 11 years ago -

Oh, but her expertise would have turned the salon around! People would be storming the doors to get to sit in her chair.

LaLa --- 11 years ago -

not to be rude but you arent going to get every position you apply for.
You cant just expect someone to hire you because you are qualified. There could have been 20 other applicants just as qualified as you. There are many spouses that are hair stylists. Im sure you are not the only one who applied.
Yes trying to find a job really sucks especially with the times the way they are and you have every right to be frustrated as im sure most people looking for jobs are.
However I wouldnt suggest continuing to rant about every job you dont get. All it takes is for one person in that hair salon to find out who wrote the post and word spreads quickly and bashing possible employers is bad business IMO.
Good luck to you on your job search.

shizzlemydizzle --- 11 years ago -

I love frustrated stylists working on my hair!

LaLa --- 11 years ago -

well obviously not frustrated while your working. Or someone may end up with no hair lol oops

a3871679uu --- 11 years ago -
