Coming out of lurker mode and Stepping onto Soap box.

It's quite simple, people....PUT YOUR DOG ON A LEASH IF IT IS NOT WITHIN A FENCED IN YARD.

I take our dog for a walk EVERY morning, ON A LEASH, around the neighborhood.

It's EXTREMELY aggravating that I can't **peacefully** walk my dog on a leash due to numerous other residents NOT leashing their dog for morning potty breaks and the dog(s) run towards my leashed dog running, snapping, and barking, causing the walk to be interrupted and having to stop for the owner to get the dog away from my leashed dog.

It has gotten so bad that during our 30 minute walk this morning, we had to fend off 4 different dogs, with one owner hitting her dog with her fist to get the dog to "listen and go into the house". (The dog did absolutely NOTHING wrong! It is a dogs natural instinct to run towards another animal....the owner is the one that was wrong...for NOT having dog on leash).

I did speak up to one of the owners this morning, and explain "and this is why housing has leash rules"...as she was unable to get her dog under control. The owner decided that mouthing off at me for my comment would replace her lack of pet responsibilities on her part.

I (sadly) understand that not everyone is able to dedicate daily walks to their pet, however, there is NO excuse to NOT have your animal on a leash during it's outside time. If you are already outside monitoring the dog anyway, why not follow the rules, make life easier for everyone, and put a leash on your dog.

Stepping off soap box.

Hey i totally agree. I had a brand new dog 5 months who was scared to DEATH of any dog. And this HUGE thing was on the loose, ran towards me my two kids, and my dog being scared ran in between my legs. I thought there was gonna be a dog fight. i was scared.

AGREE completely!!!!!!!!!!!!

SouthernTwang --- 13 years ago -

For some reason it popped in my mind... WHen we were taking out oldest do to puppy class, as we were learning ways to handle her and reward her, I kept correlating how the two were so similar. The reason I bring this up is because when I see a pet owner mistreating or giving little regard to their pet, I cant help but think of how they treat their own kids. Just my thought...

SkullGirl --- 13 years ago -

If you've already talked to the owner reminding them of the leash rules and they keep ignoring them and you know where they live, maybe think of reporting them.

Giggle Butt --- 13 years ago -

My husband told me someones dog chased after them last night when he went running. They were walking there dog at night off leash. Maybe the dog thought he was going to harm them? Either way...yikes!

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 13 years ago -

I must admit... we don't always put our dog on a leash when we're outside. However, she doesn't chase after people or other dogs. She might stand where she's at & bark, but. She also has a super quick recall & if we start to say "COME" she's on her way.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 13 years ago -

We do always put her on a leash when we're out walking though. The only time she's not on a leash is when we're out in our front yard.

DoUntoOthers --- 13 years ago -

I really hope you layer into the one that decided to mouth off?!? I would not have been able to keep my mouth shut. This is one of the main reasons I stopped riding my bike when we were still at CP. I am just too afraid of dogs and there always seemed to be several loose when I rode. But honestly you know what got me even madder? Was after their dog had come after md on my bike I hear "oh don't worry he won't bite" !
Are you friggin kidding me? Some dogs were loose in the neighborhood, but some were just on the front lawn ( WM3).

We used to have dogs too (diff base) and would let them hang out on the lawn. HOWEVER I was always looking around for people/other dogs and if I saw them, I immediately went to my dogs and held their collar. I'm sorry to these irresponsible, don't care pet owners.... But I would be reporting you and your dog every single time.

** laid

Sarah H aka Boot --- 13 years ago -

We have people on our street that do this, and it pisses me off to no end. They think their dog is so well behaved, and its not. I cant even take my dog on a walk down my street without being harassed by dogs. Howling, barking, growling, and such. Drives me crazy. We are trying to implement basic leash training in a safe environment, then move on to the wacko dogs, but apparently that's too much to ask.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine --- 13 years ago -

I do have a rant that could tie in to this.

I am SO FREAKIN' TIRED of going to the dog park & having numerous dogs go after my dog, in an aggressive or dominating manner or "amorous" reasons.

I'm aware that not all dogs get along. & w/ my dog being quite submissive... But, if your dog is the one starting & going after another dog, maybe that dog should have a time out.

Also, unaltered dogs SHOULD NOT be at a public dog park. Just saying.

DoUntoOthers --- 13 years ago -

I agree with no unaltered dogs at dog parts!! I will go a step further: no stupid or clueless owners allowed either!!

The Farm --- 13 years ago -

Your dog may not be the offender, but this is a good time to remind everyone that FREE dog obedience training for dog owners is available at The Farm in Fallbrook. Next classes after the first of the year. Classes for puppies (under one year) and adult dogs. Five sessions. Therapy dog training is also available. All you need is an active duty ID card to get the free lessons. Call 760-791-7747 for reservations. Go to dogownerschool.com for info regarding the trainer.

DoUntoOthers --- 13 years ago -

That is awesome Farm. Thanks for posting the info!! Hopefully some of these pet owners will take advantage of the class.

SenselessRed --- 13 years ago -

I agree. It's annoying when I see it happen. People have no sense. And on that note, we have cats. Lol

puppylove --- 13 years ago -

My neighbor walks her dog without a leash and her dog is one of the best trained dogs I have seen. She also leaves the dog outside in the front and it just sits there no matter who or what runs by.
I keep my dogs on leashes all the time, well unless the puppy we have runs out because he sees a bunny or something but then we are right there getting him back inside as fast as possible.

BellaLaVie --- 13 years ago -

My dog listens and I never have him on a leash for a potty break. If I take him for walks, yes, but to go potty, no.

I must admit... we don't always put our dog on a leash when we're outside. However, she doesn't chase after people or other dogs. She might stand where she's at & bark, but. She also has a super quick recall & if we start to say "COME" she's on her way.

Howling, barking, growling, and such

This doesn't have anything to do with being on a leash.

wife --- 13 years ago -

My dogs never on a leash outside but she also isn't your typical dog. She doesn't bark at other dogs, when she's outside and sees other dogs she just looks at them and comes to the door.

sweetcheeks --- 13 years ago -

Yeah my neighbors do the same thing with their pit. I guess someone turned them in, I don't feel bad because it's the law!

Sarah H aka Boot --- 13 years ago -

It does if they dont like my dog and come attack. Which most of the time happens, until the owner runs out apologizing.

ChefsDoItBetter3 --- 13 years ago -

I dont put my dog on a leash. Plain and simple. He is well behaved and I reward him by letting him walk and do how own thing when we are outside. He will 98% of the time ignore other dogs unless they come up to him first. He will 100% of the time ignore people.

Sarah H aka Boot --- 13 years ago -

Playing devils advocate here, but its the law for a reason. It doesnt matter if your dog is that well behaved, they have animal instincts that can and will kick in when needed.

If you can't defend yourself from a 7lb dog then there are different issues that need to be discussed.

Typical ignorance. Dogs aren't humans one day u may learn the hard way. Just OBEY the law people!

sweetcheeks --- 13 years ago -

Your dog may decide one day to approach the wrong dog. The law doesn't state unless ur dog is under a certain weight & u consider it to be well trained.

Sarah H aka Boot --- 13 years ago -

Or you could follow the law...just sayin. A kid could get bit, your dog could bite a smaller dog. There are possibilities.

I'm good! But thanks :)

Yea then you would get pissed for the person defending themselves and their dog and hurting your dog. I am sorry but my dog has been attacked and i don't care the size of the dog. If a dog runs up on us and looks like it will attack i will kick them in the face to protect my dog.
