Can you believe this?! My husband and I are currently on recruiting duty in Independence, MO which is just outside of the Kansas City, MO metro. I have received my final notice to take down my two American flags (which are small) and my Marine Corps flags because apparently it's in violation of our lease agreement. I couldn't let this go, and after so many people told me to get ahold of the local news channel I did..not expecting to get a call back!
Well they called me back this morning and we had an interview at 11am this morning! I'm fighting for my rights to fly my American flag and my marine Corps flag! We'll see how the apartment complex likes their dirty laundry aired on TV! Here is a link to the news website if you would like to watch it when they post it. It's going to air here on the news at 5&6 which is 3 & 4 California time!
Was I dumb for doing this or am I right to be fighting for my rights??
You were dumb for doing this - you've just brought unneccessary attention to your family. Hopefully it doesn't have an effect on your husband's ability to do his job and meet quota.
Don't be surprised if your husband gets a dressing down.
What does your lease say? Where are you flying these flags?
Actually it's funny because his higher ups were the ones who gave me the idea. It's rubbed us all the wrong way and our lease agreement states NOTHING about not being able to fly the flag. I had them tied to the railing around the dowel rod that they are attached too (remembering that they're not huge) with a piece of string..NOT HURTING A THING!
so shove it shizzlemydizzle! So glad you stand up for what your husband fights for!
I did not do it for the attention, I did it because it's absolutely rediculous that I live in the United States of America and I am being forced to take my American Flag down. Seriously? If that doesn't rub you the wrong way then excuse yourself from USA and the freedom it provides you to FLY that damn flag!
I don't think they are imposing on any "rights" you have by telling you to take down your flags because it violates your lease agreement. I am no expert but there is nothing in the Constitution/Bill of Rights saying it's illegal for them to tell you to take down your flags if it violates a signed and notarized agreement.
Good luck with everything though...and hope this publicity is good publicity and not bad publicity.
Thing is, nothing states in the lease agreement that I can't hang flags.. But yet people have stuff attached to the outside of their apartments where it states in the lease agreement nothign is to be attached TO the building.
I don't fly a flag to begin with and I personally think flags are useless. It's just a flag, in my opinion, so I can't see myself getting worked up over it.
So glad you stand up for what your husband fights for!
You mean rights?
What about the apartment owner's right to have all tenants adhere to the same standards? How about another tenant decides they want to fly the confederate flag?
Is that okay? Or is only the flying of the American flag okay?
Does your lease maybe state nothing is to be attached to the outside of the premises?
Did you tell your management that there is nothing in the lease stating whether or not one can hang flags? Do you have a copy of this agreement? If they are still forcing you to take down the flags per the lease agreement stating it does not allow the flying of flags even though it states no such thing, that's a bigger problem than just not being able to fly a flag.
GOOD FOR YOU DallasHuntersMommy! I would've done the same thing. It's BS. Our rights are being stripped from us daily. We need to start fighting back.
I agree, and you're not the first person to tell me this!!

The only thing it says is nothign is to be attached to the part of the building. it states nothing about the railing..and if thats how they want it, then they need to be re-editing this lease agreement. And I can't wrap my head around any one apartment, person, manager, etc not allowing the American Flag to be flown..we live in the freaking United States of America...how Un-American!

I have the lease agreement, yes, and I am taking further action with this! There is an apartment at the front of the complex, a lady has her little flag screwed to the side of her building on her balcony..it has been like that the whole 8 months we've lived here and I know this bc we have a carwash on our complex that I use religiously..her apartment is right in front of the exit of the carwash so I see it weekly. Why hasn't she been forced to remove her flag that is ATTACHED to the building?
I applaud you. Things in life (like rules) don't change until someone stands up for what they believe in. So many people just sit back and fallow the rules (even when they don't agree with them) because that is the rule. It is those who take a stand and do something that changes things that has made this country what it is. There will always be those who say you are wrong. Don't listen to them. As long as you are doing what you feel is right for you and your family, that is all that matters. I wish you the best with this. Battling anything is never fun. In the end I hope you prevail.

I would have given the complex a "courtesy notice" of sorts explaining your intent to go to the media if they denied you flying the flag, so long as you aren't violating your lease.
If you are getting this caught up in displaying your flag, I would assume you are flying it correctly, taking it down at night or having it properly lit etc...
I honestly see it is as case of "reading between the lines" of the lease agreement. I could see how their wording could include the railing, and it's just a matter of interpretation.
However, if they do have issue over the flag itself, I commend you for fighting it.

Flags, in general, are useless. It's just a piece of material that happens to have colors, prints, etc on it and moves if a gust of wind hits it. I have never owned a flag of ANY sort.
Apparently, the property managers interpret it to mean ANY part of the outside of the building.
There interpretation is that they don't want holes or damage done to the siding of the building or any part of the balcony...how can my American flag that is TIED with string around a METAL railing damage the property?????
