If your husband went to Dunkin Donuts this morning and drives a tan van, you might want to know that he left your daughter alone in the van while he went into the store by himself. She looked like she was probably three or so.

BlueBettas --- 12 years ago -

It's interesting how parents used to do this all time time when our parents were kinds, but now it's no longer socially acceptable.

It's a bad idea, and bad parenting IMO

YouReallyThinkSo --- 12 years ago -

It is actually against the law. Children die every year because parents want to save a few minutes and leave them in a car. If you come across a vehicle with a child inside it all by themselves and they are under 10 you are allowed to break the window and check on the child. People dont realize how fast the heat rises in a car that is off. If a child is 10 or older you are allowed to leave them in the car as long as its on. A lady in San Diego left her baby in the car just the other day by the time cops got there and broke a window to take the baby out it was already extremely hot in the car and the babys temp was above normal and going up. The baby would of died if the cop didnt break the window and take the baby out. The mother is being charged with child endangerment and last time I checked they were deciding if they should put the baby in the custody of the state.

I think it's acceptable to leave a child in the car. I grew up like this and I am "fine" no worse for wear because of it!
As long as the car is on, you can lock the doors with the spare, and the child is over at least 4-5 years of age. And as long as you can see the car and you're gone less then a few mins...

Examples: run in and grab stamps, mail a letter, get a coffee and it's a min then there is no reason to drag your kids out of the car... Then again, I'm not a mom just yet so I'm sure my opinion will change hahhha

It's not abuse, people just stick their noses in other peoples business so quickly and assume the worst. You can have a woman be arrested and her kids taken into protective custody for something as small as pulling up outside a walmart leaving your little girl (3) in the car (that you can see, is locked and running, is within 15 feet of you, and is sleeping- while you walk up to donate money to the sanat ringing the bell outside with his red bucket... (this woman didnt even go inside the store) and she was arrested, and her kids taken... I didn't catch the end of what happened (it was a dr Phil episode) but it's absurd the rights that some people think they have to others kids...

Just my opinion sorry it's so long - I'm so insanely bored tonight

As long as the car is on? Are you serious? You think it's acceptable to leave a four or five year old in a running car???

Lovesmesomecoffee --- 12 years ago -

Yes. I do.

xxxtheripperxxx --- 12 years ago -

Yes. I do.

What if they decide to put the car in gear? The little girl at Dunkin Donuts was standing in the driver's seat. Things that were acceptable at one time, but aren't any longer, are because hopefully we've evolved and learned over the years. My mom smoked like a chimney and pounded coffee when she was pregnant, so using your logic, it should be fine for everyone because myself and my siblings are healthy.

alwaysright --- 12 years ago -

Ive left my kids in the car while it is running and locked while I ran into buy gas before. My kids are 3 & 4.

They stay belted in their five point harness though

Lovesmesomecoffee --- 12 years ago -

Why is everyone so hyper sensitive about this, yes there are some parents that show ZERO common sense and leave new borns, and other kiddies in a shut of closed car for minutes, and whatever. It's not abuse to leave a kid in the car for a minute to run in and grab some stamps or a soda. Jeez people, get off you high horses .

Clinical Depression --- 12 years ago -

Yes. Because that will for SURE keep a kidnapper from attempting to take your children.

"Oh no! they're strapped in--mama means business. I better not try to take them."

Boobs Radley --- 12 years ago -

I babysit my grandchildren and I'll leave them in the car while I'm three feet away at the ATM machine, but that's it. There's no way I'd go into a store and leave them in the car! And donuts? Really? Why couldn't he take her with him? My three year old grandson buckles himself in his booster seat. It's not that difficult or time consuming.

Lovesmesomecoffee --- 12 years ago -

Because I condone the way that I was brought up, and I think that leaving kiddies inthe car is fine- doesn't mean I automatically accept the way your parents raised you- my parents didnt smoke, didn't drink, took us kids to church, played family games each Sunday, and when we ran into town I stayed in the car while mom got out and got a coffee or dropped something off. Because I have some common sense on what ACTUALLY equates abuse and what's built up propaganda and an over-reaction by the public to sever peoples personal boundaries and parenting rights to do what they see it vs what another person wants to see... Is different then just considering what I have for an opinion as an old fashioned include view point. Much much different.

Does your husband drive a tan van with Arizona plates?

Clinical Depression --- 12 years ago -

Last I checked this isn't Smalltown USA. This is CA. Get real. Don't come back here bawling and b**ching if you a) ever get a ticket for leaving your children unattended in your car, or b) they get kidnapped. You are only "inviting" yourself to get victimized if you think the citizens of CA (or any state) are Unicorns and fairies.

Or C) your car was stolen with your kid in it because you left the car running when you left your kid inside it!

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

-.-

I was raised without car seats. Seats belts were optional.

Lovesmesomecoffee --- 12 years ago -

Hahhha you guys, so worked up.

Life expansions --- 12 years ago -

A while back a mother left her 4 year old daughter and 5 mth old baby strapped in a car seat while she ran into 7-11 for a couple of lottery tickets she left her car running. When she came outside she saw someone high jacking her car with her children inside she ran to the back door and pulled out the four year old she was unable to take out the 5 mth old out of the car seat the theif took off with the back door swung open. Someone made a call to 911 and they were in pursuit of the stolen vehicle with the baby inside... miles away the baby was found dead thrown on the side of the road.Unfortunately the mother was charged with endngerment to her children and is serving a prison sentence and with the painful memories of a dead baby.It just takes a second for something to go wrong.

YouReallyThinkSo --- 12 years ago -

Remember this next time you leave your child under the age of 10 in the car alone IT IS AGAINST THE LAW. If you have a child over 10 you can leave your younger children to, but there has to be a child over 10. It is considered CHILD ENDANGERMENT! Taking the extra few minutes to take your kids out could save you from going to jail!

alwaysright --- 12 years ago -

I bet yall never feed your kids unhealthy food, play video games, watch tv, or go over the speed limit either right?

Vod Kaknockers --- 12 years ago -

It's not abuse, people just stick their noses in other peoples business so quickly and assume the worst.

It actually is abuse, have you ever sat in a car with it turned off, where it is 115 outside? Do you know what the temp is inside the car after just 1 min?

When they are strapped in a car seat (depending on the age) they can't just crack a window to let in a breeze.

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

I do all the things alwaysright said. I dont speed often but I do occasionally. But I still don't leave my kids in the car. And one of them is 11 and could probably do just fine with her own apartment if she was funded properly. Lol

laneys mommy --- 12 years ago -

Isn't the age 12 not 10? Just curious. I know the age for leaving kids at home is 12 on base.

MissKriss --- 12 years ago -

I don't think its right to leave your child in the car if you are going into Dunkin donuts or a store. But I will leave my girls in the car to go to the atm by the car wash on base or at Arco to pay for gas at the outside machine that's in between the gas pumps and I even make sure to park close to the grocery store cart returns so its easy to buckle them in then return the cart. But never somewhere where I was more then 10 feet away. And I always keep the door opened cuz my oldest (4) will be telling a million things about wherever we are at.

nictx710 --- 12 years ago -

there are far too many crazies out there to leave ur child alone in my opinion. even on base, u just never know.

MissKriss --- 12 years ago -

Even decided to look up the law online just to see and no child under the age of 6 can be left in a car without supervision of someone 12 or older if a. There is a significant risk to the child's health or saftey b. The car is running, keys are in the ignition or both. so I guess besides those two things everybody parents different and we all have different opinions on what is right n wrong.

Regardless of what our parents did to us when we were kids, the LAW says you cant leave your kids or pets unattended in a car.

I'll send you to the Federal Court and CPS you when I catch you.

I didn't know you couldn't leave your pets in the car. I've seen a lot of dogs in cars and thought how sad it was, guess now I can speak up for them!
