My son came home today and started telling me that he is taking naps in his classroom and they are sleeping on the floor. Im just wondering if anyone else's children have told them something like that.. I know that everyone probably has different teachers and they all do things differently but i was just curious. Cause sleeping on the floor YUCK.... lol.... Im going to ask the teacher tomorrow to see whats going on but i thought i would just ask as see if anyone else knew anything... thanks ladies...

KnightRider --- 12 years ago -

Are you sure he didn't mean that they were laying on mats? My son takes naps at his daycare and they sleep on mats that they have to take out and put away at nap times.

a3515405uu --- 12 years ago -

Ya I'm sure i asked him a couple times in different ways. When we went to meet the teacher she put the schedule on the board and it didn't say anything about nap time.

accountnickname --- 12 years ago -

When I had a kid in kinder there (he's starting 5th now...) they didn't have naps. Maybe it's just some sort of quiet or reading time.

a3515405uu --- 12 years ago -

ya i asked my daughter who is in 4th grade this year and she didn't have it either...

Charlie'sWife --- 12 years ago -

My daughter is in first grade there, no naps in kindergarten last year for her at least. They do have mats that they sit on for circle time. But even during that the are singing and playing games.

Wiscogirl --- 12 years ago -

I know now that kindergarten is a full day there was talk about that there might be naps and that they'd have nap mats but I'm not sure if that ever came true. They didn't need them with half days. Sorry cant be of much lore help I'm curious to know now too though.

chelleydi77 --- 12 years ago -

No naps. I have a lot of friends w/ kids in kinder and none of them take naps

GardenWitch --- 12 years ago -

Mine were in kinder there when it was full day, they had a quiet/circle time when the teacher read to them and some of the younger kids did fall asleep during that.

I know my child wasn't napping. She was the one who brought home notes saying "she runs around the room in circles during quiet time". lolz...

accountnickname --- 12 years ago -

^ bwahaha that would have been my kids. They all stopped napping at 2. :-/ As an aside, I didn't know Mary Fay stopped full-day kinder. My younger 2 had half-day kinder at a different school. I liked it because it meant they had two teachers in there working with the kids most days.

chelleydi77 --- 12 years ago -

I didn't know Mary Fay stopped full-day kinder.

it's still full day kinder at MFP

Okay need some HELP LADIES..... I asked my sons teacher about the nap thing..... Here is what she said. No the kids are not taking naps they have quiet time when they come back from lunch recess. ... Okay that is fine with me about having quiet time... She said that it is for about 15min... BUT she said that they DO lay on the floor... Im not sure about all of you but I think that is TOTALLY UNSANITARY. I asked if i could bring him something to lay on like a towel and she said no cause all they would do is play with it... Where do i go from here???? Is this something I should bring up to the principle? Im not sure if other teachers are doing the something.

JAMS --- 12 years ago -

Kids are unsanitary people. They pick their nose, put things in their mouth, scratch their butts...a floor would be the least of my worries.

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

I'm normally on teachers side but hell to the no. I would be there in person at the principles office. There is NO reason at that age for quiet time to be necessary like that. They can sit at their tables and read or many other quiet activities. I would be pissed.

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

Floors are extra gross. you step in poo and pee and all other crap and then drudge across the floor. No just no.

a3515405uu --- 12 years ago -

Maleficent- thanks for the input... I wanted to make sure I wasn't being over the top concerned... I could think of tons of different ways to cool the kids down from after lunch. They could just SIT on the floor or do an activity at there desks....

I know that all kids are doing some nasty things at school. But there NASTY shoes walk on that carpet all day and then they lay on it with there faces pressed to it or the back of there heads... oh YUCK easy way to catch something really bad...

I hate to be one of those parents that complain which is why I was asking for some input..

blah blah blah --- 12 years ago -

Really, Does your child sit on the floor in your home? Cause im sure your floor gets walked on and there is germs there too. Are there desks in his class that they sit in or I know in PreK they have circle time and they have this huge carpet they have squares assigned to them they sit in. Its not any worse then sitting on the floor at home or in a cart at the grocery store or not to mention if he goes outside and plays on a playground there is germs everywhere. LMAO.

Maybe take a hand sanitizer in and tell the teacher to have him wash his hands with it.

But its not that serious like said above there is ALOT of other unsanitary things children do.

Dirt don't hurt!

It builds up the immune system. We've become a nation of germophobes.

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

I'm far from a germaphobe. That beig said, I have a degree of control over my own home. No one wears shoes in my house. At a school... The floor is gross. And yes there is a difference between your face being on the floor and your ass.

Secondly, that wouldn't be my only issue. There is no reason my kid has to lay down for 15 minutes at school. It's school not daycare.

a3515405uu --- 12 years ago -

Yes my kids sit on my floor at home but I shampoo my carpets weekly and mop my floors daily. And this is Kindergarden not Daycare.
When my kids were little to sit in shopping carts I cleaned them before they even got in them. If they play outside they wash there hands when they come inside.
Im not sure something about this whole situation just doesn't seem right...

Clinical Depression --- 12 years ago -

I'm sure doorknobs have more germs than the floor. Even if you wash your hands you're touching a knob that someone who hasn't washed their hand touches and essentially makes your hands unclean.

accountnickname --- 12 years ago -

If you use water to shampoo your carpets you probably have more bacteria growth in them from the repeatedly wet conditions the carpets and pads sit in than you would if you didn't clean them.

chelleydi77 --- 12 years ago -

The 15 min of quiet time is probably when they have just come back inside from playing. The teacher needs them to calm down before she starts teaching, especially at that age. Do you let your child play outside, play on the playground? If so, I think laying on the floor should not be a concern at all.

;) I hate to be this person but....I layed on the floor as a kid and I turned out just fine.

GardenWitch --- 12 years ago -

We all did, lol. Our moms never sanitized shopping carts either, or even shampoo'd carpets more than once a year (if ever) for that matter!

I play in the dirt almost daily. I have never had a flu shot OR the flu, or a staph infection or any other nastiness that germs supposedly cause.

;) we had no carpet all hard wood floors growing up but I'm going to be real honest for a second. I'm a clean person but I don't carpet clean my floors weekly, I have this thing called toddlers! My kids are fine and they roll around on my floors and outside all the time. GASP I let my kids lay in the germ infested grass searching for 4 leaf clovers all the time.....

puppylove --- 12 years ago -

My sisters friend is a kindergarten teacher and she does 15mins of quite time after they come in from playing if she doesn't the kids try to run around like crazies. She sometimes reads to them during this time sometimes play calming music. It's an important part of the day.

GardenWitch --- 12 years ago -

And if you have pets, taking your shoes off inside amounts to zilch. Dogs step in all kinds of stuff outside that they track all over your floors everyday.

I take my shoes off and wear socks inside. But it's not about germs, it' s just so there's one less occupant tracking stuff in that I have to clean and my feet get cold on the tile floors.

All day kinder is hard for some of these kids that never went to daycare etc. Some are pretty young too. That 15 minutes is helpful to calm them down, everyone is sitting quietly paying attention. At their desks, that doesn't always happen.

accountnickname --- 12 years ago -

Transition is part of developmentally appropriate practice as outlined by the NAEYC. Not only that but some children are still napping at that age. My sister was one of those types, my own kids were not. It helps kids like my sister deal with not being able to keep napping.

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

A transition of some sort is fine. Putting children's face on the floor is not. Give them a mat or let him bring a blanket at minimum.
