So, we live in Stuart Mesa and because we have no AC we're hot and I've had heat stroke before so I can't tolerate this anymore. Anyway, I was wondering, what sort of hoops would I have to jump through to be able to have a window ac? I've heard something about a prior authorization from base housing but since I have yet to be able to get through to them on the phone, can ya'll help me out? Thanks. :)

California760 --- 12 years ago -

Just stick it out. There's only a few weeks in August where everyone fakes an illness to get AC because it's miserable on base. After labor day it will cool down, you'll be fine.

xxxtheripperxxx --- 12 years ago -

I have to agree with California. I've lived here my whole life with no A/C, and I live a helluva lot farther away from the coast than Stuart Mesa.

Adrianamendozaa --- 12 years ago -

loan locker fans at the community centers work great :] but its closing down so i would head to a department store and buy a cheap fan... still gets hot at night

BlueBettas --- 12 years ago -

I can totally relate to the whole heat stroke problem. It was almost a daily occurrence for me when we were in 29 Palms. Get yourself a portable swamp cooler. I love mine, we used it every night in our bedroom this summer.

Kahootz --- 12 years ago -

We actually have one already and use blocks of ice pretty much nightly, it just isn't quite enough though. I went ahead and ordered a fan, and in conjunction with the swamp cooler that should be enough. Thanks guys. :)

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

My neighbors just put a bunch in. Just do it. By the time they say anything it'll be time to cool down anyways.

Yea by all means break the rules and get kicked out of base housing. Ppppbbbttt.... LORD! Go to the appliance store and get some standing fans. They are $28. Its not that bad. Visiting back home, i would get in the car and the temp read 115-122! Your gonna make it! Like OP said, its not that much longer before it cools down. If they thought you were gonna heat stroke they would put AC in all houses. If you can PROVE you have an issue with heat, take your PROOF to EFMP and register. You can then qual for AC. We like to turn on the AC unit in the house to cool and have the fan set to ON from about 9pm-6am and it pulls in cool air from outside. When we turn it off we just keep the house closed up until it starts to get too warm in there and we open the windows back up. It actually works.

Clinical Depression --- 12 years ago -

You might avoid them finding out THIS year, but base housing is going to begin metering base-wide come October I think they alleged, so you're going to have to find a legit EFMP reason as to why you need AC come NEXT year. Otherwise you'll just have to start paying OOP for electricity costs. Everyone is suffering at some point in this heat, not just you and we're still alive.

AGREED

grantsmommy --- 12 years ago -

look at the forecast for the next week, its going to be in the low 70's. Just stick it out!

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

No one is going to get kicked out of housing for a window unit. Housing can't afford it.

They actually can and will kick you out if they find out, Our old neighbor got kicked out because she had window units in every window and they were EFMP. Get fan.

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

They must have had other reasons. The AC units alone wouldn't do it no matter what you're neighbor said.

No they got kicked out bc the ac units. You arent supoosed to have them unless you are EFMP. And if you have them its considered breaking your lease aggreement bc it says in your lease you arent allowed to have ac window units.

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

We were also told that EFMP can't have them either you can only have window fans, not AC units. Either way, I highly doubt (bc this is what the lady at the wire mountain office said) they will kick you out. She said they can fine you and and you would be responsible for damage. She said they wouldn't kick you out. I asked bc my daughter is EFMP and I'd rather not go through the hoops to get AC if I want it so I wanted to know what the worst that could happen was. That's what she told me.

laneys mommy --- 12 years ago -

We know personally several people that have had AC units. The only thing housing did was tell them to remove them. They did NOT get kicked out. Sounds like neighbors that were exaggerating and decided to leave because they were told to remove their AC's. EFMP families who have a medical need and get AC approved CAN have them. We have to pay for the AC but lincoln will install. We are in the process right now for our 17 month old that has been vomiting in his sleep for months and just developed some type of rash in the last two weeks. He's also stopped gaining weight. We don't know exactly whats wrong yet. He's been through a ton of testing. The DR doesn't want him in heat since it can make things worse.

AZbound --- 12 years ago -

We had a window a/c in our window by our front door & window fans in every room. We were never told to remove them & we aren't EFMP. Maintence & people from housing had been to our house and never said anything about them. This was in WM2.
As for getting kicked out for an a/c....especially if they never got a "warning"...yeah right.

a3515405uu --- 12 years ago -

You are allowed to have AC in your house if you are EFMP with a medical condition that is needing it. I have an AC unit in my house due to my sons medical condition. EFMP gives you a letter stating that you are needing AC due to a medical condition that your doctor has provided it is all in the application when you sign up for EFMP. We have had AC is all the houses that we have lived in WM2, WM1 and now Stuart Mesa 2.
Laneys Mommy I am going to IM you cause your child sounds like my son....

AnonyMISS --- 12 years ago -

God forbid you ever get stationed at Camp Lejeune! Seriously people, yes there are some hot days, if you get OUTSIDE it's not that bad. But sitting inside your house all day, it does get hot. But face it people, it's only 85 degrees for god sake!

shizzlemydizzle --- 12 years ago -

Yeah, but Camp LeJeune housing has A/C! ;-)

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

I just came from Camp Lejeune. My house never felt like that there. 85 here feels different than 85 there. I grew up in Houston with 105 degree weather at times so I definitely know what it feels like.

a3515405uu --- 12 years ago -

AnonyMISS- For one we have been stationed at Camp LEjuene and we owned a house out there to have AC.. We moved to California due to Rady Childrens Hospital for my son. He has been hospitalized for having a Heat Stroke so until you have a child with a Heat Condition like mine you probably will never understand the Medical reason for having AC even in the little Heat days that we have here...

Im not sure if that comment you last wrote was even towards me or someone else with medical conditions. I was just trying to help anyone that had family that was in need of one with the correct information about housing.
If it was not toward me then Im sorry I must have misunderstood.

Clinical Depression --- 12 years ago -

^ I'm sure Anonymiss meant the people who don't have valid health reasons that necessitate an A/C, whining that base housing should come with A/C/allow them to install them. Well, people are free to move off base if their needs aren't being met and you can even save BAH in doing such! I think LMH won't care as much come October 1st when metering begins bc the resident will be paying for it instead of trying to be "sneaky".

laneys mommy --- 12 years ago -

I grew up in Virignia but we had AC. We just did three years in Maryland with AC as well.

When it was in the 80's we used the AC. At our base they had the utility program and we still always got rebates so I know we didn't use it in excess. I think its quite normal for people to use and want AC in 80 degree weather.

I also know this isn't atypical weather. We go through this every Aug and Sept.

Clinical Depression --- 12 years ago -

People know full well moving into this housing there is no AC, did you not realize that? This isn't everywhere else you had AC. This is CP where AC is not standard.

AnonyMISS --- 12 years ago -

I grew up in Maryland & South Carolina. Yes you need AC there in the summer as it's 95 degrees with 100% humidity! Although, if it broke, I know I would survive. But here, seriously, you can't stand a week with 80 degree weather and 70% humidity!? It's beautiful here! My family WISHES they could be here enjoying this "cool" weather! Unless you have serious health issues, DRINK WATER and go OUTSIDE! It's beautiful, people! Stop complaining! (Steps off soap box)

FrogdReameR --- 12 years ago -

You can get a portable AC unit, the kid that has the small window thing like the window fans, this way you are not having to actually install anything or making the are look "bad" with a nasty window unit hanging out. It is what we did for my husband who has massive sleeping issues and has to sleep in colder temps/ We plan to get a second one for downstairs next year. It may cost us a little extra when they start metering but it's worth it to have him well rested and all of us be comfortable in our own home.

Maleficent --- 12 years ago -

I didn't know there was no AC when we moved it. It's not exactly an advertising point. I went to them with a maintenance request thinking it wasnt working.

laneys mommy --- 12 years ago -

The point is you might say its only in the 80s but people with AC use it when its in the 80's. Therefore its not over the top for people to be uncomfortable and want AC with 80 degree weather. Also one persons opinion on whats comfortable isn't another persons. 80's doesn't really bother me but it does our infant.

Be very glad that your life goes according to your plan and you keep blinders on in a bubble as to the real world. We aren't talking about average every day needs! Yes we knew there wasn't AC. I personally have never needed AC. This is our second PCS here and it was much hotter last time. But I also didnt have a sick infant that can't keep weight on because he vomits 1-3 times a day and now has a horrible rash all over and is on 3 different prescriptions for it as well as 2 prescriptions for the vomiting. He is down another pound over the last week!

I feel very sorry for people that as parents wouldn't go to any extent needed to help their children when its within their ability.

I don't give a D@mn about whether I knew they did or didn't have AC when we moved in. As a parent I care about what my son who had 7 drs appointments last week needs now. Thank goodness there are people with common sense like my husbands command who have been concerned for our sons health and helped us expedite the process.
