Unfortunate it had to come to that for her husband.

Helping Heart --- 8 years ago -

My hope is that we can support the Blum family at this critical time.

If he retired, his funeral is paid for by the govt and he had life insurance. Why does she need to raise funds?

ooorah69P --- 8 years ago -

She was pretty much told the same thing when she posted on Military.com and given all sorts of links for assistance.

I've been told suicide makes life insurance policies void. Also my dad retired and I paid 6k out of pocket reimbursement is only $300 for the burial fee, nothing else. He can get a bugle play and gun salute for free though. (Should add his plot was already paid for, and I didn't pay for his memorial service, so this was strictly for handling the body- the va gave me a $300 check after I showed receipts. I think gov only pays if you're kia)

The only info I have is that the military has denied survivors' benefits. She has been told that she does not qualify for assistance. I am assuming this means monthly pension and health care.

He will received burial honors, a plot and a headstone. The family must pay out of pocket for other final disposition expenses.

This has been a learning experience for me, as I thought that survivor benefits were automatic. Evidently they are not.

chingao --- 8 years ago -

Insurance policies are not void by suicide. Unfortunately I have seen them paid out more than once SGLI/VGLI.

As to her being denied survivors benefits, there has to be more to the story.

Sad to see him go out like that though.

I know my dad's wife did not get his pension either from the military (did get his city benefits though) nor my mother (ex wife who "rated" 30% of his retirement).

IrishTwinsx2plus1 --- 8 years ago -

Military retirement benefits are not automatic. You have to transfer policies and join/opt into others. If you don't before certain deadlines, you get nothing. It's unfortunate and something we've all learned a lot about this week. I am so proud that our community has pulled together and tried to take care of one of our own.

She posted a new fundraiser at the prompting of others and stated he had life insurance for 120 days after retirement and he killed himself on day 134, well why didn't he buy into it after it expired?

Seeing as he killed himself I feel it's safe to assume he wasn't in the right mindset, he wasn't "planning ahead" because he was stuck and fixated on one thing. I don't know him or his situation, but his outcome should clear a few things up.

but his outcome should clear a few things up.

LOL True story. Once you're out you're on your own to keep everything in check.
