A well taken care of Mac can last for many years. My older one is 3.5 years old and has been though a LOT of abuse from my kids.

Depends how much u want to spend, what you want it for, basic surfing, games, etc.

Mac's are good and reliable. And Apple as the best customer service by far.

Dell's get criticized alot. But mine is about 4.5 yrs old, about 3.5 yrs of that was in Iraq and i've never had an issue with it.

I know alot of folks that have Sony Vaio's and seem to be satisfied with them.

PCmag.com and CNET.com are good for laptop reviews. Consumer Reports is good also, but you have to register to see reviews.

I had my Mac for about 7 years and it still works great. I haven't used it much for the past 2 years since I got a new one but I turn it on to get old files and use it sometimes.

MAC without a doubt!!! I will never buy another computer again!

I love both of my HPs. I picked HP because I was living in Corvallis where one of the HP plants are that make some of the components for the computers. So in a way I was supporting local jobs. (Little disappointed to discover it was assembled in China though... at least the parts came from the US)
Got my first HP in the fall of 2006 as a going back to school gift to myself. Then in Spring of 2009 I got the one I'm using now with my tax return as a gift for having a full time teaching job (my old laptop could only play the Sims, and I wanted one that could play the Sims 2, plus I wanted a blu-ray, and it made sense to buy a laptop with a blu-ray player in it instead of spending the money on just a blu-ray player.)
My old laptop my husband upgraded the hard drive (because he bought the hard drive, then discovered it wasn't compatible with his laptop, and was hell bent on using it) and we gave it to my mom for her birthday. So she's using it now and has no issues with it.

I personally hate Apple (the interface frustrates the hell out of me) and feel they cost way more than they are actually worth. I refuse to buy anything Apple.

In the end, it depends on what you're used to. If you've been raised with Macs, and like working with them, and you have the extra money to spend on the name, then good for you. I was raised on a PC, and am also frugal. Instead of wasting money on a machine that I know I will want to throw out the window because I can't find the programs I want, as well as it not being compatible with what I already had program wise, I opted to save money and go with an HP, which I had built to my specs so I know it had everything I wanted in it.

In the end, the choice is yours.
