Does anyone know if Cali allows a person to NOT actively look for employment while collecting unemployment if they are enrolled in school full time? Also, does anyone know how much an E5 collects on unemployment?

puppylove --- 12 years ago -

To my knowledge they do not. When I was on it they caled every couple of weeks and asked where I had applied.

shizzlemydizzle --- 12 years ago -

No, you have to be actively seeking work.

If you are unable to work because of other commitments(attending school, small children), you are not entitled to unemployment.

Yea what shizzlemydizzle said.

I claimed unemployment in Cali when we moved and was getting 742.00 every 2 weeks and at that time you would complete a form that was attached to your check and mail it back. No phone calls.

The mantra is, you need to be willing, able and ready to work.

They just recently changed the unemployment rules about looking for work (I know, I had just finished having it for 2 years last week). You still get a form to fill out, asking about if you looked for work or not. Before you just had to mark down that you were looking. Now you also have to fill out the back with the contacts of where you applied. Let's just say I wasn't happy with having to keep track of all of the contacts I had made, especially since my claim forms were usually 3 weeks late.
I also found it a problem because I am a teacher, so when schools are hiring is seasonal. Plus, with the way the school districts are these days, there wasn't 3 new jobs a week available for me to even apply to. Luckily they implemented the change in June, when schools had started hiring again. It also forced me to send reminder e-mails (which counted as company contacts) to the districts I've applied to.

Either way, the unemployment has run out, and I'm still job hunting!

If its for a marine who is getting out the usmc then as long as your ft student you have 2 years to collect unemployment no questions asked. But if your a regular civilian or spouse then the reg rules apply.

You should have to keep track. When I was on it I got a phone call every two or three weeks and was asked where I had applied. Also if you are on it I at least think you should be looking for a job that is about the same pay not just in the field you want to work in. I do dog training and baking & pastry arts but those jobs aren't very easy to get so I look for a job in other fields.

I was wondering what Cali's rules were. I know some states don't require a person to actively look for a job if they are enrolled in school full time - makes sense since furthering their education will help the person get a job/better job when they are done with school.

shizzlemydizzle --- 12 years ago -

I never heard of a state not requiring a person to actively seek employment if they were a student.

People who work also attend school to increase their skills, so that doesn't even make sense.

If someone can work & go to school, there is no reason for someone to collect unemployment, go to school and not actively seek employment.

I'm not sure where you got THAT information, but unless that has changed in the VERY recent past (2-3 weeks), your information is incorrect. A Marine exiting service gets no such special treatment. We must be actively looking for work just like everybody else.

But to address the original question, there are certain situations where the State of California WILL allow you to collect unemployment while NOT seeking work. There are several "In Need" professions that the state will allow you to pursue by way of schooling in order to achieve your license or certificate. Your best bet is to contact your local EDD office and talk to them directly and get accurate information vs getting bum scoop around here.

Idk about here in cali but in va and ny thats how it is.

EastCoastChik --- 12 years ago -

And i know this for a fact bc my brother and cousin live in those states and are ft students collecting unemployment for 2yrs no questions asked.

NY must have changed their rules.

NY has ALWAYS been you must be willing, able and ready for work.

I just checked the NY DOL website and it says the same thing - being a student isn't even addressed.

States WILL waive the seeking work requirement IF a claimant enrolls in a training program through that state's DOL

CuteCurlyC --- 12 years ago -

Yes, that's the rule in NY. If you're a full time student you collect unemployment without needing to look for a job. That's the reason I asked about Cali. Thanks to the ones that tried to help!
