Has anyone's husband decided to use their GI Bill for graduate school and pay out of pocket for undergrad since its a lot less expensive? If so, was he allowed to request fanancial aid for their undergraduate degree? Thanks in advance!

My husband used TA for his undergrad degree and part of his GI Bill for whatever TA would not cover for his grad degree. You can always request financial aid through FAFSA but it won't necessarily get approved. I'd have him call the ed office and schedule an appt and they can tell him about all of his options to make an informed decision.

You do know the MC pays 100% tuition for classes he takes while he's still in right? It doesn't reduce your GI Bill at all. He should speak with someone at the education center on base if he needs some guidance.

My husband has never paid a dime for anything he's taken over the past 15 years or so. The GI Bill is just waiting in the wings for whatever he decides to do once he grows up and retires, LOL.

I think the rates vary on if the member is enlisted or an officer and there is a cap. Plus, TA (tuition assistance) may require the member to incur an additional service commitment.

Either way, it's a great program!! I would get in quick as the $$ has already been cutback and is continually on the chopping block. :(

Thanks! He's actually getting out next month so TA is no longer an option. We don't mind paying for the remainder of his undergrad out of pocket so that I can take his GI bill for law school or he can use it for grad school. That's why I was wondering if he can save the GI bill and get some help through FAFSA for the final 2 semesters.

Since he is getting out, don't forget about the bah benefit he will receive for being in school. It may benefit you to utilize the GI Bill now and save the bah as it comes in. Congress could decide to take that benefit away with all of the budget cuts. If that is your only "income" you could possibly qualify for the pell grant or other scholarships.

Good luck!

TA got cut waaayyy back late last year. It doesn't cover nearly as much as it used to.

If you are planning on using his GI Bill for yourself, make sure he has transferred benefits to you BEFORE he separates, otherwise he will not be allowed to do so.
TA is $4,500 a year (beginning October 1st). So if you plan classes out right, you can take them consistently without running out of TA. It makes no sense to utilize the GI Bill while you are in since service members have this. (& you lose out of the monthly housing allowance anyways)
The rate does not vary for officers or enlisted. And you do not incur additional time in service either. You cannot utilize TA if you only have a few months left thought. The exact amount of time tends to vary by command.

Bummer about TA. :( There are also scholarships. Some are super easy to get because no one applies for them. I would talk to someone down at the ed office anyway because they can still show him how to get additional resources. Also, a lot of universities have Vet Centers that help out with all of these types of things. They were super helpful when I went to school.

I would also file an application with FAFSA. It doesn't hurt to try. I used my own GI Bill and still got financial aid. Although, you will have to use your taxes for 2011 which will show his income from last year, not this year.

And you do not incur additional time in service either.

Officer's actually do incur an additional 2 years. I'm not sure if that is only for fiscal year 2012 but it's on all the forms. :/
