Any advice?

I'm new ish here and haven't been fishing since I moved out here. I am not interested in the pier.

Thanks

You can fish at Lake O'neil on base. Or there is Lake Poway about 40 minutes from the Oceanside gate. There is also Diamond Valley lake, Little Lake and Lake Hemet in Hemet. Lake Hemet is up the mountain a little bit so it is further out. It all depends on how far you want to drive.

There is also Irvine Lake which is up north if you are near the north side of base.. But I have heard it is kind of crappy for fishing. We haven't gone though.

We fish off the Jetty in Camp Del Mar. My husband uses ghost shrimp, squid or swim baits. We've caught halibut, perch, cailco seabass, and sting rays.
We haven't had any luck on Oceanside Pier this year. You also can try fishing in Carlsbad's lagoon between Tamarack and Cannon Rd.

Lake Skinner (there's an entrance fee)and Big Bear.

Depends what you want to catch, the lakes are mostly bass. You need to find a stream somewhere for trout and most of those are catch and release. Salt water is whatever you can hook.

***FYI, I personally would NOT fish for anything at Lake O'Neil, it was a EPA superfund cleanup site in the 80's.

Yeah, I thought O'Neil was off limits for any water recreation - swimming or fishing...

Lovely, lol I typically catch and release anyways, but anything down near oceanside? Salt or fresh?

Mainly the piers and jetty's, anything with a beach usually has swimming so no fishing.

The freshwater streams and creeks are too shallow and pretty much dry up in summer. There was a nice stream on the north side of base, you had to hike to it but I read it's now a federally protected waterway.

Here's a couple links to Sd area lakes and other fishing spots, depending on how far you want to drive.

Yeah.. I never said I'd EAT anything caught at o'neil.. just an option for fishing that is super close and accessible... And it isn't off limits.. They sell bait at the office and regularly stock the lake.
