Anyone else's husband here doing the program currently?

christina --- 12 years ago -

Not now but my dh did like 8 years ago, asome program! Way to go for your dh getting into it, way back when it was very competitive.

Bradleysmommy09 --- 12 years ago -

Mine keeps trying to set up his pkg but the guy is never there. He just got flagged for recruiting so this guy needs to show up to work!

KayLay --- 12 years ago -

Yes.. It is still VERY competitive.. He got in his first try but apparently that is very hard to do. There is a TON of paperwork!

Christina- How does your hubby like Officer vs. Enlisted side? Was it a pretty smooth transition? Mine is at OCS now so he will be starting school in Jan- I know that will be a little shock for him since he hasnt been in school for a while!

Lol, welcome to the dark side.

Congrats on his getting accepted into Mecep.:) For me, dh went straight to BOOST, college, OCS, commissioned after graduating college and TBS. I have to say, for our family it was all worth it, he did stay home for about 5 years(except for OCS & TBS) without deployment while on the program. I am so very proud of him for his accomplishment. There were times were he thought he was unsure about his choice (mainly during OCS) because as you said, It is very competitive, and many other marines in the program either could not cut it and chose to quit. I always reminded him that he could do it, he was just as good as others who have succeeded in the program before. And in the end, after everything, he has realized that he was meant to be an officer and is very proud of his accomplishments. Good luck to the both of you!

How long did it take to get accepted after he put in his package ? Mine should be putting his in next week.

christina --- 12 years ago -

I think it is a board that decides who gets in, and I want to say they meet during late summer so you know if you got accepted in time to do college applications in the fall. That is if I am remembering right.
The transition went pretty smooth, my husband is a grunt and as a 2nd lt got no respect until people realized he was prior, then things got better. Somedays he loves his job, but a lot of times he hates al the paperwork involved in everything. He feels like he doesn't get to bond with his guys because he is always in an office someplace doing paperwork.
Also make sure and apply for as many scholarships and grants as you can, my dh qualified for a lot so we got to pocket pretty much they whole gi bill.
Good luck to you! Enjoy your college time, also for you, if you haven't gone to college yet do it while your husband is!!!!! That's my biggest regret is at I didn't finish while my husband did, it would have been so easy.

Thanks for all the great info!
Just a wife- They do it a little different now with the schedule.. As soon as they get accepted they go to OCS first before they can go to school. Apparently they had too many people going to school and not making it through OCS. So it has been a little shock to his system I think! haha

Bradleysmommy09- He put his package in around the April timeframe and the board came out in July. There are three different boards so he can put in his package and find out and different times throughout the year!

christina- I am worried my husband will be like yours and hate the paperwork side of things. He has been enlisted for 7 years as Recon and I think being an officer will be a whole new world compared to that! I am finishing up my Master's right now so I am ready to be DONE with school for the time being! haha

What kinds of scholarships did you apply for/where did you find them?

THANK YOU EVERYONE :)

I see. I guess alot of things have changed with the program since the hubby started. I do know that they axed the BOOST program after he had already gone through it. I have to say that hubby's most struggling time was OCS. Was like going to boot camp all over again for him. But after in my opinion, it will just get easier. College will be a breeze and TBS not so bad. He was lucky enough to be in the top 5% to get career designated after he was done.

My hubby's a recon officer now, he is with force company. He is loving all the cool training but HATING the paperwork.
Have him fill out a fasa form, and apply for pel grants. What school is he going to? My husband went to university of Michigan, I wanted him to go here in ca but he said now way was he going to school by a base, he was afraid the ROTC would have him at base doing a bunch of training. Going to a school so far away from a base, they pretty much left him alone. It was nice, a good break after the rigors of training and deployments.

christina --- 12 years ago -

Once he gets to school the ROTC unit should tell him about scholarships too, there are quit a few for military guys.

Bradleysmommy09 --- 12 years ago -

Sorry for all the questions but my husband wants to know if there are any specific things he should look out for In the interview? Specific questions or anything like that. He's afraid he's too average to get accepted so he wants to know if there is anything specific your husbands had (awards) things like that , that helped a lot. He's nervous.

christina --- 12 years ago -

My husband said from what he remembers it was a lot of questions about your opinion on military and political policies. He remembers for sure them asking his opinion on women in combat.
I know he had really good letters of recommendation. When he got accepted he had only been on one menu, no combat, yet.
