I have heard of cake in a mason jar. But I wanted to know some opinions or any tips about it. My husband is deployed in afghan and I would like to send him cake in a jar. The cake will be homemade but not by me. If I buy the jars and cut the cake in slices and place it inside the jar will it get there nice and moist, ready to eat? Also, do I have to fill it up to the top of the jar? Any tips will be appreciated. TIA.

You actually cook it in the jar and then seal it while it's hot. I'm waiting for their weather to cool down a bit more before I send any.

Use a little less water than the recipe calls for, like 1/4 a cup less. Make it in the jar its self and than seal it. Dont frost it, send the frosting separate. It will be nice and moist.

I have made so many of these! Some recipes will tell you to grease the inside of the jar. Dont do it lol after you make them You can add cute labels do them and decorate the lids. One time I made them for christmas and I covered the lid with a christmas pattern material then tied it together around the lid with green ribbon. They turned out so cute!

I did the same thing with brownies (my husband doesnt like cake) but I did them in individual portions and they turned out great.

I made them for my husband when he was there (middle of summer)..they looked FANtastic HERE, but by the time they got to him he said they were nasty, smelly and soggy :(

Not sure what happened because the lids did seal...

That may have had something to do with it? The heat maybe got to them somehow. IDK how I'm just guessing. I sent the brownies in the fall.

Yah that was my guess too, what he DID like was those betty crocker brownie bowls you add just a couple tablespoons of water to and put in the microwave, he loved those! ;)

I also made him spiced pecans which he said were fantastic too ;)

How do you know it seals right? Does it pop close? Like when you open a jar that you can hear the pop?

USMCFunSize --- 12 years ago -

It's pretty simple.
Buy some mason jars (they sell them at the commissary). Fill them about half way with cake mix and cook them in the oven until done. IMMEDIATELY after they come out of the oven put the sanitized lid on them. I boil the lids while the cake is cooking. Screw on the tops right after you have all the lids on. You should start to hear little "pings" as they seal. You can tell if they sealed properly by pushing on the top. If the top of the lid has any flex to it, then it did not seal properly.
I made them for my husband and he loved them. They took a really long time to get to him in Afghan and he said they still tasted great. Don't forget to include a tub of icing in the package and some plastic forks!

They do sometimes. Lol if you don't know it's going to happen you suddenly hear all this popping and you're like WTF?! Ha ha but yea what USMCFunSize said here You can tell if they sealed properly by pushing on the top. If the top of the lid has any flex to it, then it did not seal properly.is correct.

That is funny! I had that happen with some Jam I made the 1st time I made it, and then it was so long before I canned anything again that when I made pickles it did the same thing to me!!!!

The cake in the jar thing is something I am gonna be doing when DH next deploys. (Depending on the season of course)
