Does the base still have the DMV? Is there a quick spot most people don't know about? Also a quick place to get base stickers? Do you need to have a smog done before you get base stickers? Thanks

The base DMV is still there! It's on Mainside in that shopping area. I got my new registration stickers there a few weeks ago. As far as base decals, that's the JRC.

Yes, the DMV is in mainside. they charge $23 for their services. Your car ONLY needs a smog IF the DMV renewal notice says, so...at least that's what I'm thinking. I may be wrong though lol.

And your decals for your vehicle, you can get them by the main gate as well as in mainside. I just can't remember exactly where.

Thanks!!!

If you have out of state plates you will have to get your vehicle smogged.

You can mail in your registration and not have to pay any kind of fee that the DMV on base charges, on top of regular fees. It's super simple. If you have a current CA registration you don't need to smog your vehicle for base stickers, but if your car is registered out of state you do need to. And the quickest place to get your base decals is at the little office right next to the main gate. It's a little portable. They do passes and IDs. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes.

The base Dmw does Cali plates out of state registeration which you can't do by mail of your husband is from somewhere else.
Our cars had Cali plates but we paid ND registeration plus the fee they charge but it was still cheaper then the cost we would have paid.

my husband went to the regular dmv and was in and out in 10 minutes. Saved us the $23.

My husband is not a resident of California. Would we need something from his command? We do not have California plates. We do have old ones from 3 years ago.

As for base stickers do we need a smog for that?

IrishTwinsx2plus1 --- 13 years ago -

It's not a CA DMV - it's a registration office that tacks on a fee for the 'convenience' of doing business there. You can make an appt at the local DMV office or do DMV transactions at a AAA office and be in/out in 10 minutes without paying extra.

You'll need the Non-Resident Military Exemption Form. You will need a smog certificate to get the DoD stickers.

Most states have forms online and offer free registration for military. The base DMV wont know this. I would suggest saving money and calling the state you want to register the vehicle in. Its pretty simple and you could save a lot of money.

FYI The reg office has upped their fees from $23 to $45.

My husband just got both of our vehicles renewed a few days ago at the DMV on Miramar and I wish we didn't do it there.
Right when he was leaving there another Marine came up to him (a MGYSGT) and asked what he had done and said he had a couple of his Marines go there and they were scammed so they're suing.
Come to find out....we thought by going there we were saving some kind of fee that we were going to be charged otherwise...don't remember what it was....but that was only if we paid online. If we would have just gone to the regular DMV we still would have had the fee waived plus we would have saved our $50 we paid the guy to do it.

It can be faster but I wish we would have just gone to the DMV. We would have if we would have been more aware.
Not sure if it's the same at both bases but I would assume so.

Spend 25 bucks a year and use the AAA dmv office. Barely ANY wait and being a AAA member is awesome.
