Here's FB page with several photographers for Camp Pendleton. You can look at the portfolios and decide for yourself who is good. And you are absolutely right, you get what you pay for!
If you know the homecoming date you can try Operation Love Reunited... they do pics for free. They have different photographers in the San Diego County area to choose from. It's best if you book in advance, if you can. Good luck.
I love Stefanie Drake! She just did my maternity photos, and will be doing my newborn photos and our homecoming photos :) as well as family photos for our xmas cards.
Do you know why? I'll tell you. She's a talentless wannabe. There are 20 professional photographers right off the bat who have more talent that her in their pinky toes. You get what you pay for.

idk i had a great experience with her! :) and i love my photos.
she gets your photos back to you next day or even same day.
Not like I'm a photography expert or anything, but IMHO that is not a good thing. A professional photographer should be spending more time with the photos than that.

That's fine, it's just not how a professional photographer will usually handle photographs IME. When I've hired a professional photographer (no one on PU) they've taken hundreds of photographs, spent the time to carefully pour over them for all the best shots, printing them out and presenting them in an album for me to spend time choosing from etc. No editing (not photoshopping...) would be done until I made my selections and it was certainly not noticeable. Also the professional photographers I've hired have always cared about the quality of the prints that are displaying their final product so you order your prints through them and their chosen company.

That's how my wedding photog was... but she also cost $6k =X For little things, these unprofessional photogs do a pretty good job and they're cheap.

Luckily I never spent much more than I see the other types of photographers advertise for. All I was saying is that getting the photos back the same day didn't seem like a good thing. I'd worry that meant the photog wasn't taking enough pictures, kwim?
Luckily there are photogs who provide all types of services so everyone can pick exactly what they need! We never hired anyone for homecomings so I wouldn't even know what to recommend for that.
I paid $40 for my photos lol and for what i wanted i didnt wanna pay a lot. but Jaimes photos are amazing! Im looking thro them...lol i love baby photos! :)

$40 seems like too much for someone who just snaps a picture and prints it out.
i got well over a hundred photos on a disk and she did a bsic touch up on every single one of them. i thought it was well worth the price! i talked to other photographers who wanted to charge over 100 to do the same thing lol
I think in almost all situations the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies. I have seen Stefanie Drake's portfolio, and to be brutally honest, most of her sessions are not worth the $40. They look like pictures anyone with a camera can take. I am not saying this to be mean. It is my opinion and nothing more. I'm sure with more practice she will improve, but for now she has awkward poses and bad lighting for the most part.
Jaime takes awesome pictures if you want my recommendation. She just did our family photos this weekend and we love how they turned out.
The best wedding photos I got were taken from my mother, who has an old fashioned film camera. The rest sucked. If a person isn't looking for top notch, edited photos, who cares? If they're anything like me, especially with my maternity photos, I just wanted the pictures to look back on and remember. I'd rather pay extra for beautifully done pictures of my babies.
