Has anyone or do you know anyone that did not accompany their husband on Recruiting Duty? I know they say it's a relationship destroyer but it would be no different than getting unaccompanied orders to Japan. Just looking for some opinions.

shesfromthevalley --- 13 years ago -

Ehh, to me it's alot different than unaccompanied to Japan. Thats another country where the women speak another language and they're on a base. Recruiting they have more freedom since there's no base, just their office. They wear their dress uniforms ALL the time so they get alot of attention from women. Most high school girls wouldnt look twice at my husband when he's just out in his normal clothes. Stick him in his dress blues and it's like a moth to a flame. Without a wife there, they may feel free to do whatever they please. My husband is the only person in his office who is married and the other guys are always trying to get him to go out. And the hours are soooo long, it'd be hard to find time to talk and connect.

The only reason I'm asking is because we are being sent to an area with an astronomically high crime rate and we are going to have to live a bit of a ways away. I know I'm going to end up sucking it up and going with him but I'm just not thrilled where his orders got changed to today with such a small child and him being gone until late at night everyday.

shesfromthevalley --- 13 years ago -

That blows. Where are you going?

AnonyMISS --- 13 years ago -

Ugh, we just got finished recruiting three months ago. Awful. I agree with shesfromthevalley. So true. We were in Wisconsin. Real Bummer 6 months out of the year, lol.

Saginaw Michigan. Up until yesterday we were going to Grand Rapids. Saginaw has the same crime rating as Detroit/Flint.

We have been on duty for 7 months. It sucks, he works 8-9:30 at night. They really have to work their butts off to make quota. The guys at office are really nice. 2 are married and one has GF. I don't worry about my hubby and being pressured with going out in stuff. It has been the hardest 7 months ever, just take it day by day! So overall if you get good guys at office, and your hubby is good at his job, makes it a bit easier.

Im from Houghton lake Mi which is about a hour north of Saginaw. Its really not that bad. I wish we were going there. I love it there.

My husband is in class now. We actually aren't going to be living together together when we move either. He is getting an apartment an hour to an hour and 20 minutes away (in another state) from where me and our daughters will live. He wanted a place close to his RSS in case he works long hours etc. If he gets off at a reasonable hour and wants to be with us he can, if not he can stay at his apartment. I'm sure it's not an ideal situation for everyone, but I know it will work great for us. I have a job lined up already, and my kids will be in one of the best school systems in the state which is really important to me because in another year my daughter will be starting high school. I'd do what was best for your family. Perhaps you can sign a short term lease somewhere and see if it's really as bad as you think it is before making a decision. If it is you always have the option to leave.

I wish the guys at my husband's office were married. :( It would make this so much easier if there were other wives to hang out with. And my husband's office sucks because they ALWAYS make him take the kids to MEPS so he has to leave early alot.

Calimommy --- 13 years ago -

I only go to lunch on occasion with one. The other one doesn't live here. I have 2 friends. Lol. The guys take turns going. But my husband has 2 schools that are 1-2 hours north. So he is always out of town. But if he has to go get one two hours away. One of the other guys will take him two hours south to MEPS than my hubby will take him north 2 hours. I can come by office if they are not busy. Anytime I need to. We have only done lunch 2 times.

Just live outside saginaw. We are from battle creek and I went to western michigan university. I would suck up the drive and live outside city limits.

DramaLlamasMomma --- 13 years ago -

They have a rule that you can't live more than 20 miles away. So we are looking its just kind of hard.

They have a rule that you can't live more than 20 miles away. So we are looking its just kind of hard.

That rule must be RS or RSS specific, because we live almost 30 miles away. Can you ask if he can get a waiver for that rule? If you can live outside the city, he should be able to park his car at the closest recruiting office, and communte in his government vehicle so you won't have to pay for gas out of pocket.

I just want to give you (and anyone else reading) a little hope though....

My husband is a recruiter. There have been late nights, but there have been far more early days. My husband (and his entire office) were done at 1:30 today! He is usually home by 7 or 7:30 on a "late" night. Keep in mind that includes his 30 mile commute into the city. He is really enjoying it, and as a family, it has been far better then I was anticipating so far.

All I ever heard about recruiting were horror stories, so I thought I would add a little positive :)

I know someone whose husband was assigned to New York City and they decided to have her and the kids live with family in Texas instead.

My husband is a recruiter and we chose to for me to stay behind for a few months. We decided this because we have 3 kids in school, he was assigned to a rural area with a high snowfall and there were literally no house for rent bigger than 2 bedrooms, and we own a home here we need to deal with first. The recruiting orders came as a last-minute surprise so we weren't prepared at all. My husband was supposed to be going to MARSOC until they suddenly changed the time-in limitations and he had a few too many months in.

Anyway for us it hasn't been a big deal. In fact I think it is really good that he has been able to settle into the stress of recruiting without having to worry about us at home and it is paying off. He has always had a job that took him away a lot, however, so we are really used to long separations. It doesn't hurt that we've been married 11 years and are best friends still.

Calimommy --- 13 years ago -

I have 100 negatives, lol. But one positive is that it has brought us closer. It's almost like having a break from him and realizing how much I love him. We have not really fought in 7 months that we have been here. We don't see each other much, so we spend every minute together making the best of it. I don't see how people would leave their husbands over this.

My husband finished recruiting duty back in October, and while I know it has a lot to do with the rs and RSS he had a very good 3 years, lots of awards and a meritorious promotion. Yes there were late nights and weekends but he didn't wake up every morning on the other side of the world in a country full of people that wanted to kill him. I don't know about you not going with him, but I would say that you and your husband will know what will be best for your family. I personally couldn't imagine voluntarily being serrated from my husband for that long, but that is just me.
