Sorry, I know housing questions suck but we are in Okinawa and have not been to Pendleton before so we would really appreciate some help! Right now we are deciding between O'Neill Heights and North DeLuz as our housing choice - husband is E7 and we have 3 kids so we want a 4 bedroom. We do not have any petsa. ANY advice, opinions, pros and cons for the 2 areas would be GREATLY appreciated!!

We are due to arrive mid June and we can get on a wait list now so we want to make a decision soon. Is it possible to choose more then one place for your application? Is one area any easier to get a 4 bedroom then the other?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give!!

O'Neill Heights is single story homes with big fenced yards. The homes are a little older but the neighborhood is nice and quiet.

North DeLuz is 2 story, newer, bigger (I think) but houses are closer and there aren't any fenced yards.

Well just so you know they are ran by two different housing companies. My husband just put us on the wait list and they made him choose one area. But he did go to camp pendelton and look at all the housing besides O'niell heights because they said there was a 6 month waiting list. And they had no empty house he could look at. Ultimately he chose Wire Mountain 2. Hopefully it isn't a bad choice but he said it was the biggest out of all the houses he saw. He is an E-6 with3 children so the housing choices are the same :). Hope that helps a little

Here in North there are a few that are one story. we have 2 stall garage (In ONH you are not gauranteed a 2 car garage)

we are not allowed to have any pets. I'd suggest here :)

Oneil heights I believe would be better housing with a nice fenced back yard. They use to be officer housing. They are older but bigger and are a stand alone home. There may be a reason you prefer Deluz though. Most of them are two story. Pro or con for different people. Some of O'Neil have a one car garage I believe. I haven't seen the Deluz 4 bedroom so maybe someone can tell what they like about it. Oneil has a kitchen with eatting area plus two other family/living rooms.

It took me so long on my phone to type others beat me. Lol

North Deluz 2 story 3bd and 4bd have the same first floor layout. There is just a smaller upstairs hallway and smaller bedrooms. I love my house, but I also think that the O'Neill community is nicer and not as "crowded". However that being said I prefer having two floors as opposed to one. O'Neill may be "older" on the outside, but the inside is just as updated as the N. Deluz houses. Ultimately I don't think you can go wrong with either.

I would make sure in O'neill you rate a 4 bedroom. I was told they were E-9 only when a friend of mine tried to get a house here. If you do rate it this community is great and you don't have to deal with the school traffic!

Jayne Wayne --- 13 years ago -

O'Neill is a LOT nicer. Both have A/C now also....

I was told they were E-9 only

They are E6-E9

THANK YOU everyone for your answers!! I know there are pros and cons for each area and I appreciate hearing your input. We do not have pets so we don't care either way but we do have 2 young children (the other is a teenager) so having yard space would be nice for them. So does DeLuz have NO space outside for them to play? Or are the houses just close together? Just trying to visualize the "no yard space" issue. As for the O"Neill 4 bdrs being for E9 only we will have to call the housing office to ask about that. I have not heard or read that from anyone else and it is discouraging to hear but I will have to ask them directly. We have 3 bdrs here and it really stinks having to have the baby and toddler share a room so we REALLY want a 4 bdr there. Not sure if that means we have a better chance to get one in DeLuz. Anyway thanks again...if there is anyone who would be willing to share some pictures with us of either area we would be SO appreciative!!! I am on Facebook and I am not a lunatic, LOL!

My husband is an E8 and we have a 4 bedroom in DeLuz. When we moved in here we were told that the 4 bedrooms with a 2 car garage were reserved for E8-E9. I have no idea if this is true.

We lived in N. DeLuz for 3 years and loved it the first 2. Then we got a certifiable nutjob neighbor that we shared a wall with. Things went downhill from there. We also had issues with teenagers running wild and wreaking havoc towards the end of our DeLuz stay. O'Neill Heights is wayyyyy better in so many ways. If you can get into O'Neill I would choose O'Neill over DeLuz any day!

I was told they were E-9 only

They are E6-E9

I was told the 4 bedrooms were for E-9. I wasn't talking about the whole community.

a3426941uu --- 13 years ago -

It is not that the 4 bedrooms are for e9 it is that the 2 car garage homes are for E8 and above and the the four bedrooms are some of those ones. I only found this out becaus I live In oneill and we are E6 and just found we need to move to a four bedroom ( prego with twins). They told me that it impossible to get a 4 bedroom in oneill. There are I only like 5 four bedrooms total in oneill too, and Lincoln said the wait list is like a year.

*ShinyCandy* --- 13 years ago -

I live in O'Neill also and was given different info about the 4 bedrooms when we moved in a year and a half ago but that is common from housing. Either way my suggestion is to find out if you can get a 4 bedroom and if you can O'neill is an awesome place to live. I prefer it over DeLuz.

a3426941uu --- 13 years ago -

I am so sad we have to move. I love it here but we need a bigger house.

sassypea --- 13 years ago -

Well thank you all once again for your insight...we are going to call both Hunt and Lincoln on Monday to get some first hand answers (or the runaround but hopefully answers) about this stuff.

SO if this is all true and the chances of us getting into O'Neill 4 bdrm are slim to none let me ask THIS now....

What area would you recommend for an E7 4bedroom? What would you say should be our ideal choice? I know different people like different things but it would help me so much if you told me what you think is the best area for us and why. We do have 2 smaller kids (3 and 10mos) so having some outdoor play space would be good....we do not have pets but aren't opposed to living around them.

Thanks again everyone, this is all REALLY helpful to us!!

reinacat --- 13 years ago -

I have had many friends who lived in O'neill and loved it. It was highly recommended to us. Don't know anything about Deluz. Welcome home from Oki. I know it is hard moving back stateside. We did it 3 years ago.

reinacat --- 13 years ago -

We have lived in both stand alone and attached homes. I prefer the stand alone if we can get one!

sassypea --- 13 years ago -

Reinacat - where did you live when you were here in Okinawa? We are on Lester and the housing is SO outdated, I am excited about having some newer, nicer choices over there but having a hard time deciding which area to go for. Thanks for the welcome - we leave here in June and will have spent almost 4 years over here. We love so much about it over here but we are also very ready to be stateside again. Good luck with your move - when will you be in Pendleton?

reinacat --- 13 years ago -

We loved oki, and it was hard to leave. Stock up on furniture. Everyone who comes to my house loves the stuff from oki. We were there for 3 1/2 years from 2005-2008. We lived in old lester, not very nice. I am actually surprised that housing is still there. They were going to get rid of it 10 years ago.

The housing stateside is nicer! We went from oki to 29 palms, not so great housing there. We are in Quantico now, very nice housing. Pendleton housing is nice. June is a good month to move with all the PCSers, housing turns over quickly. There is usually a wait in 29 plams, but we moved in June 2008 and got a house in 10 days. Hope you do too. We will bein Pendleton around the 1st of June. You can message me anytime about Pendleton. I have not lved there in 15 years, but is is my hometown so I know a bit. The housing has changed a lot in the 15 years. I know a bit.

mommyoftwins --- 13 years ago -

O'neil has no 4 bedrooms available....right now there is a wait list with people who have been on there for awhile....I an expecting our third and was looking to move into a 4 bedroom so I called them a few weeks ago and she said that it would be a long time to get into a 4 bedroom in O'niel Hieghts. I currently live in DeLuz and I dont like it....there is no room for my kids to play outside unless we go to the park which is a pain but I do it anyway for the kids. Deluz right now has 5 4 bedroom homes available.

TweedleDee2 --- 13 years ago -

5 4 bedroom homes available.

And one of them is attached to us :)

Vod Kaknockers --- 13 years ago -

I would say, for us, Stuart Mesa or South Mesa. Where my husband would work it would be better for us. I would find out where he will be working and then decide from there.

Here is a map of the base (page 2), if you know the area he will be working in then you can see how far away whatever housing is from his work. It is an older map but the areas and housing areas haven't moved.

sassypea --- 13 years ago -

He will be assigned to 1stMLG which we have been told is in the Mainside area. That is why we originally were looking into North DeLuz and O'Neill Heights - but now that I have seen the interior of DeLuz (someone sent me a video of their home) I am concerned about the room sizes and the lack of outdoor space. We do like O'Neill but have heard that the 4 bdrs are really hard to get and we want a 4 bdr.

I spoke to someone at Lincoln today but she wouldn't really give me any answers about wait times, she made it sound like I had to talk to the govt side of housing for that info.
