What do I do? I am grossed out. It like my child having lice. Barf!

Last night I saw one flea on my pup. Upon further investigation I found a teeny patch of what I believe to be eggs (or whatever it's called). Looks like we are catching this really early on.

Needless to say I rushed do the store to get flea bath and some liquid stuff that goes down her back (forget what it's called).

What else should I do? I don't want to ave a flea infestation.

The vet offers flea meds in an oral solution/pill. Actually, thats if they are out of control!

ItchyWitch --- 13 years ago -

Use Borax on your carpet. Sprinkle it all over and let sit for a day or so, it will kill everything.

Calimommy --- 13 years ago -

My animals when we just moved had maybe 2 at the most. All I did was frontline them. I did nothing to the house, only because they were not infested. I think if you catch it early, you should be ok.But if I see one I would feel dumb not doing anything, lol. Be careful to do to much, aren't you pregnant?

*Pinklala* --- 13 years ago -

I use frontline plus every month(once per month) on my kitties. It is one of the only ones that I know of(without going to the vet) that will kill the eggs as well. It is a little spendy, but you also get a 3 month supply, and works great!

I used a flea collar, and had the apartment bombed, because they spread REALLY REALLY fast. You might think there is only 1, but its like roaches, if you have 1 most likely there is more.

Also-Walmart sells bombs that you set off in your house, use 1 per I THINK* 600 feet? I used all 3 in a 800sq ft apt about a year ago, haven't had a problem, but I moved too.

whatevergirl2 --- 13 years ago -

Thanks guys. I am preggo. I don't want to use bombs or anything else like that. I will look into frontline.

WEG I know the costco on the east coast carries frontline much cheaper than you'll get from the vets office. you might want to check there first. It's expensive, but definitely works.

Vanbam --- 13 years ago -

my daughter looked like she had chicken pox. our fleas were really bad. every one suggested comfortis flea meds and it worked amazing!

I'll go there. Thanks!

make sure after you vacuum you empty out the bag/canister because flea eggs can hatch in that and then they can crawl back out of the vacuum into the carpet again

whatevergirl2 --- 13 years ago -

I wanna barf. Poor pup. Luckily they are not bad!

I found that advantage works better for my dog then front line does. So maybe buy just one pack of a few and see which one works best with your dog. I have heard people swear by all of them yet some don't work for others.

DocsWife --- 13 years ago -

When we had fleas I was pregnant as well and had a crawling baby so we went with Fleabusters, which is a sodium based solution, so it's completely safe for you, your babies, pets, etc. Our infestation was pretty bad though, so it was worth shelling out the money. It was $245 for our small apartment but it is guaranteed to last at least a year and if the fleas come back in that time, they will redo your place for free. Even if your pet brings in more fleas the treatment will continue to work and kill them. The company also allow you to split the payment into two payments.

I believe Fleabusters also has a product you can buy to treat your place yourself as well. Link in case you wanted more info.

ETA: Depending on how many pets you have this could be cheaper than Frontline or Advantage in the long run. We had 3 pets so buying that stuff monthly added up, plus in never even worked for us!

OMG!!!! I found two fleas(one on each dog) but Im sure there are more.! Is it that time of year? Or does this happen year round??? HELP!!!

Donny --- 13 years ago -

it can happen pretty much all year long in SoCal. I keep flea medicine on my dog year round (i apply it once a month). Once you see fleas on your animal it's usually too late and they are in the house and breeding like crazy already.

Ugh. We had fleas bad a few months ago. My mother asked us to keep her cat for a few months, since she had a roommate that kept letting him escape outside. I've lived with cats all of my life, yet never had an issue with fleas biting me until he came to our house and escaped from our apartment a few times. We live in a city area, and have neighbors that have dogs. I read online it has something to do with your blood or possibly what you eat. I don't know what it is that makes a person more prone to getting bitten, but my 3 yr old and I were getting eaten alive. We literally had over a hundred bites on our legs from those nasty things. I tried the Hartz monthly flea medication for two months. I was stilling finding them jumping on my son and I. My husband seemed almost immune to them. We tried the carpet flea medication, which didn't help much. Finally, I read online about throwing salt on the carpet and tried that. We haven't had as much of an issue as of late since then. I went from picking 10 fleas off of my legs a day, to seeing maybe two a week jump on me. I still have no clue what worked...

And since then, my mother asked for her cat back, but we adopted a kitten that ended up on porch. I know she has fleas, because I bathe her once a week and see them on her. But we have 90% less bites than before. I want to treat her when she's old enough with Frontline, but I just wonder if it really is better than less expensive monthly treatments. I tried so many different methods to ward them off, that now it's hard to know what worked. It's extremely frustrating having fleas attracted to you. It's like having lice.

Momma2Fur --- 13 years ago -

Just a side note: Never, EVER use Hartz or similar off brand flea products. I can't tell you how many times I've seen animals die from poisoning from those brands. I don't know why they are still on the market. It's especially poisonous in small animals (most deaths were kittens or small puppies) but it should give you an idea of the poison it puts in their system. Be careful! Go with a trusted brand, even if it costs more.

My vet gives my puppy Comfortis. It's an oral medication. I don't want anything topical on her since I have a young child.

GardenWitch --- 13 years ago -

If you have a yard or any outdoor space your pet uses, treat it as well. It does absolutely no good to treat the animal if they just bring the fleas back in from outside.

This medicine works like magic. When we went to go visit my family in TX my lab got fleas. Hubbys aunt gave me a Comfortis for him and they were gone in 30 minutes. I use this on both of my dogs now.

This! And it works so much faster then frontline and that.
