So. My husband and I moved to Stuart Mesa in August. I started work in November and my sister has been watching our 1 year old since then. Well she's starting school next week. So the last 3 weeks I've been looking into new childcare. I work in Escondido so it's quite a commute. I called the FCC office and got a list of providers and applied for subsidy. Well, there is only ONE provider with an open infant spot and she keeps rescheduling for us to meet her so I'm already put off. Now I get the response to our subsidy app and we still will be paying $150 a week, which is about half of my income when I include gas to drive all the way out there. I have no idea what to do. I can't afford to quit but I can't afford to pay daycare either. And nobody I've found on PYS is willing to go less than $125 a week, and I can only afford $100 maximum. Ugh. I feel stuck.

I was considering becoming an FCC provider, but I feel like everyone else is in the same boat and can't afford it anyway. What should I DO??

I think if you became a FCC provider you would do fine, there are always people who need daycare. 100$ a week will be hard to find and if you do they won't be licensed or anything. Good luck to you!!

I'm sure there is a need for more FCC providers on base!! :)

Chicago --- 14 years ago -

im going to pm you

Put in an application for the CDC, it's income based. You will have to stick it out to get a spot like I did, but the wait is worth it once you don't have to worry about daycare anymore. Get on the waiting list as soon as possible!! I know it's expensive, I have 4 kids and I'm in almost the highest category, but not having the stress of wondering if you are going to have child care makes it worth it.

The cost of day care is the reason I became stay at home. I used to work as a nanny and would charge $100 for two days a week. Your best bet is CDC, or keep trying to find someone who will do it in your price range. It might be tough. Most people who babysit aren't certify and some don't have any experience with such young children.

I hope you find childcare soon though.

I've put some serious thought into becomming an FCC provider also. It just seems to me like there are a lot of them out there? I have been debating this for a while now.

Thanks ladies... I'm throwing around the FCC idea but I'm not sure. I've already applied for the CDC but its a long wait. By the time he gets in we'll probably be moving lol. I'm hoping I can find another mommy who's content with staying home and would like a little extra income on the side.

I was on the other end of this situation at one point so I will give you the other side.

Caring for an infant is a lot of work, yes all children are, but infants require lots of attention and time. I ended up quitting b/c I was being ripped off. I was being paid $125 at the most and that was not agreed upon at all. Had that been the situation, I would never have done it.

I hope you find someone who is willing to care for your child b/c it's something they want to do, not just for the cash b/c at the price you are looking to pay, that's more than likely what you will get.

MasonsMommy --- 14 years ago -

Abra, I know what you mean. I don't consider infant care too hard, unless there is more than one, but I do know that unless you care for 9 kids it's not a great income. Lets just hope by grace of god someone just wants another little one and some spending cash, because that's all I have to offer.

If any of you know an fcc provider that has room for two infants, please pm me.

vicdorkia --- 14 years ago -

Ive been wanting to look into becoming an fcc provider because I know a lot of parents are in the same boat as you are! I used to watch a few kids when we were stationed at lejeune and the parents tell me all time they wish I was still there because they dont trust any one else!

EastCoastChik --- 14 years ago -

BE VERY CAREFUL with fcc providers. I brought my daughter who has only been two 2 daycares back home one for daytime and the other for nights and weekends. I cam here got her physical and she checked out.. Brought her to a fcc prvider and she caught LICE!!! It was horrible! and the provider knew about a child having it. then she cancelled on me CONSTANTLY! thank God i been with my company 4 yrs and have some tenure but i transferred to a new store and they were gettin ticked. So make sure you inspect everything and anything!

Vicfigueroa you def. should.. you should do night and weekend care you would make a ton of money! I was thinking of doing nights and weekends but i have 2 dogs and in order to get fcc certified the dogs cant be around the kids...

vicdorkia --- 14 years ago -

Yeah we live in stuart mesa on the non pet side so no dogs for us! I will have to really start looking into it asap.I know its kinda scary to leave your child with just anyone so I think becoming an fcc provider would be a great idea.

EastCoastChik --- 14 years ago -

yea then you should def do it! and watch at nights and weekends you will make a ton of money bc no one really charges reasonable rates to watch at night or on weekends. and most people who work, usually work nights and weekends..

I am in the process of getting licensed to be a Small Family Child Care Provider. I am already a Licensed Foster Care Provider. I do not currently have foster children. It is a lengthy process to get licensed to be a FCC. The huge draw back is how many children of what age groups are allowed. Example. If I have three children-one 2 1/2 yr old, one 1 1/2 year old and a 2 mo old baby. I can only care for one child under 2 and 2 children over 2. It makes it even harder when people want child care for 100 per week for an infant. So to stay home with my own kids and care for one infant (not my own) I have an income of approx $450 a week? That's tough to live off of.
You can have dogs and be licensed as an FCC. What matters-are the kids safe around the dogs and do the parents feel comfortable?
I am super curious to know what other parents are looking for?
I have no children in my home-totally a fantastic place for 1-2 children to get the best of care and I haven't found a family able to pay an hourly rate of $6.50/hr.
