Anyone know how much you get when you move from NC to CA pendleton doing a DITY move..just a ballpark figure..doesn't have to be exact

CivMP --- 12 years ago -

i dont know, but i got over $2000 moving from El Toro to Oceanside... 17000 lbs.

GardenWitch --- 12 years ago -

Depends how much weight you have, DLA depends on rank, how many dependants etc.

Two people, drove one car, towed the other with the rental truck, about 9000 pounds and we were paid a total of $12,000 when all our receipts and travel claims were settled this last April.

Has anyone done this recently? We just spoke to TMO who said that people have been abusing DITY moves (for instance we know someone who made $16,000 on a move) and they said that the standards have changed to where it should be an even amount if TMO moved you. They could be full of crap, but I'm doing that exact move next month. I'll let you know!

DITY/TMO only pays you 95% of what a moving company would contract with them for your estimated weight, so that doesn't make sense? We had estimated 8000 pounds, and ended up with 9000. (we rated 14,000 pounds so we were fine) When we turned in the weight tickets, they paid us the difference between the estimate and actual weight, same as TMO would do for a contracted moving company.

The rest of the money you receive consists of travel, milage, DLA, reimbursements for temporary lodging etc. All monies which everyone gets, not just DITY movers.

I have heard of people padding the loads with cement bricks, or claiming to drive a car they didn't even move with them, that kind of thing. But all they would need to do for us is look at our last two moves and they could see we definitely downsized for this move!

A lot of people are using shipping companies like Pods etc. You really don't make any money doing it that way, but it is easier. Maybe those moves are what TMO is having fits about.

Just talked to TMO - we are "supposed" to pocket $4600 for Camp Pendleton - Cherry Point. Def. not what it used to be!

GardenWitch --- 12 years ago -

Well that sucks, we were paid 4900 just to move on base at Lejeune from Hubert....10 whole miles!

YouReallyThinkSo --- 12 years ago -

It all depends on your weight. We were a family of 4 E5 when we PCSed from 29 Palms 2 years ago. We were paid just over 7 grand included DLA and all that to move ourselves. It cost about 300 bucks to do the actual move. California they probably didnt include DLA in that. TMO usually doesnt even bring that up. Its based on family size. I forget what the numbers are tho.

TMO is also only part of the money. IPAC/dispersing handles the rest of the allowances.

YouReallyThinkSo --- 12 years ago -

Yep, just dont count on a certain number. Do your move in your budget and than whatever you get if its more will be a nice surprise and something that can be put in savings.

California760 --- 12 years ago -

^^^^^ Agreed.

I think SO many people do a DITY move and plan on the extra $$$ they might get. We are doing it because we are moving in between Christmas & New Years, and if we did a TMO move our shipment would have been late, and I don't sleep on the floor! I want my stuff RIGHT when I get there, which just so happens to be on a holiday!

Plus, we don't have any kids, so we don't have to worry about that. I'd rather be responsible for my items, drive them myself, and have them when I get there. Any money we make is going straight into our savings anyways.

We used TMO to move cross country, and still ended up being reimbursed like 4000 for gas, mileage, rooms, and food.
