Has anyone used militarybyowner.com to either rent or advertise a house? I was wondering if the ads are legit. Thanks in advance. 

We looked at a lot of rentals from there. They're legit.

Thanks!! I was a little paranoid because I hear horrible stories from rentals posted online. So is the idea that the owners are military families that are being stationed elsewhere and need to rent until they come back? 

Pretty much. I mean they may no even intend on ever going back and it could just be an income property. It just depends. But usually yes it's someone that bought a house then got orders later on. 

One house we looked at was owned by a retired USMC couple. They actually lived in the local area but decided to downsize and rented out there house. The house we actually rented was pretty much what Maleficent explained...But usually yes it's someone that bought a house then got orders later on.

I'm pretty sure their is criteria to list with that site. Have you tried AHRN.com??? 

No I haven't. I didn't know about it. If you know of any others please let me know. 

Try AHRN.com, it's a DOD approved site. You have to open an account but it has pretty up to date info on rentals. I haven't used it in awhile but last time I did, there was quite a bit of info available for each rental they listed. If you are a potential renter it's super helpful. I'm not sure what the criteria to list is, if you are an owner though.

Also, the base housing office will have an approved off-base list. I'm not sure if you knew about that but we've used that before as well both to rent a house and to put our house up for rent.
