So my husband went into anaphylactic shock at our home in Temecula, we had to call an ambulance. They sent us a letter saying tricare denied the bill. This is the first time my husband has ever been to a civilian ER. Does tricare not cover them outside of base?? TIA

YouReallyThinkSo --- 12 years ago -

You need to appeal it. Thats probably all it will take. Tricare denied us once for a ER visit when we were at my moms and I appealed it than it was approved.

Thank u

my husband was in a motorcycle accident. and was ambulanced to palomar in Escondido. tricare covered it thank God.

ps- sorry to hear about your husband. my daughter has one of those allergies we have to be on top of or she could be taking that same ambulance ride. hope he is feeling better

We were told if we go to an outside Er to call within 48 hours of checking out and tell tricare. I know stupid but that's what they told us to do in order to have everything covered.

Good luck and I hope he is feeling better

Tricare did the same thing to my son. It was a year ago and I keep going back and forth with them. What happened to us was basically the city was using a medical code that tricare didnt understand. So the city is now sending more detailed information to tricare to try and get it approved. It's a pain in the butt but you're going to have to make a lot of back and forth phone calls. They will eventually cover it but everyone is going to make you do as much work as possible before they do. So call tricare and ask them why they denied then call the city and tell them what they need to do. Rinse and repeat until the idiots clean up the situation.

I actually was on the phone with Tricare yesterday. My son had to be seen in urgent care off base (as we were no where near a naval hospital) we have been to this urgent care about a year ago and it was covered, no questions asked. But this time we got a bill. When I asked about it, they said they changed protocal about a year ago and now you have to call within 48 hours of going to see an off base urgent care or er as they are not contracted with urgent care... we were stuck with the bill. But I think it will be different in your case because he was taken by ambulance.

woman that is weird, I have taken my sons to the urgent care out in town a few times and we have never gotten a bill. The last time was a couple months ago.

I've taken my daughter and myself to urgent cares out in town and never got a bill either.

This urgent care was in La mesa. It is not contracted with Tricare. I ended up having to pay part of the bill. I gone myself as well as have taken my son to this urgent care before ( we are in sd a lot) and never got a bill until recently. IDK what is different with the urgent care you have been to, but this is my most recent experience. As per Tri Care, they have become a lot more strict with which practices they will allow, as well as protocal.

It's called a "retroactive referral". Urgent care is no longer covered. You have to try to schedule an appointment with your regular Tricare approved provider first. If it is after hours or they do not have any appts open, you have to go to the nearest civilian or military ER or your "point of service" benefits kick in. I just went through the same thing. Terrible!

As far as an ER visit their handbook states that any loss of life, limb or eyesight emergencies will be covered at 100% whether it is a military or civilian ER. Anaphylactic shock is considered life-threatening, so the ER visit should be covered. You might have a co-pay for the ambulance since it is a separate bill but the ER should be covered. I hope your husband is better. If they didn't prescribe him an Epi pen I would ask for one at your regular doc.

my husbands command just passed word to them this week that all er visits have to be at naval, even tho orange county hospitals are closer to us. apperently its cause goverbment budget cuts and what not. either way, id just keep hounding tricare if its obviously life or death situation.
