Ok so I really need a contact exam and at a good price. Out last duty station I was able to get it done for $20. Yes I know it's going to be more. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have called Walmart and LensCrafters but I was hoping for something a little less. I have also checked the place by the MCX Thank you

AussieGirl --- 13 years ago -

I got mine at the base eye place on Mainside, it was not too pricey and they are super nice in there

rottoncj --- 13 years ago -

Thanks I will call them tomorrow or Monday if they are not open tomorrow!

Brandie --- 13 years ago -

Walmart is cheap... $34

rottoncj --- 13 years ago -

Which Walmart I called she told me $85

namenotalreadytaken --- 13 years ago -

I just got mine done at Walmart a week ago for $40. Tricare covers the regular eye exam, you just have to pay for the contact fitting part of it

Brandie --- 13 years ago -

Walmart on vista way i was just in there yesterday and had my daughter's glasses fixed and asked how much. $30 something for regular contact exam and $56 for if you have a astigmatism. Did you tell them you have Tricare when you called?

LuvMyHandsomeMan --- 13 years ago -

I got my contact exam done for free at the optometry place inside the naval hospital.

rottoncj --- 13 years ago -

Thanks!!! Also did u call the same number a the appointment line to make the appointment at the hospital

LuvMyHandsomeMan --- 13 years ago -

No, my daughter played soccer with the optometry managers son so she just made the appt for me. I'm sure you can call the regular appt line and they can either make the appt or tell you how to do it though.

carlyrod --- 13 years ago -

I thought NH Optometry Dept was only for AD?

LuvMyHandsomeMan --- 13 years ago -

Idk, but I'm not active duty and I was seen there.

YouReallyThinkSo --- 13 years ago -

The naval hospital is only for active duty, well the optometry dept is. You must of got in cause you were friends with someone who worked there. Walmart will be your cheapest bet. The place on base was one of the most expensive places when I called around. Walmart used to be 20 but it increased by 10 bucks as long as you dont have a astigmatism. The person who quoted you more gave you the price without tricare.

What manager? The people who run optometry don't have young kids.

As for the OP, my husband works Optometry. I will ask him about civilian eye exams. I know he gives them at times, but I don't know the circumstances.

carlyrod --- 13 years ago -

I had a very thorough eye exam there but I had surgery and was experiencing some vision problems. It was arranged by my surgeon and they were great, but I could tell they don't see civilians everyday.

DocsWife --- 13 years ago -

I asked my husband and he says that dependents are entitled to one eye exam a year. In order to get a contact exam he says that you have to have had worn contacts before (something about someone already showing you how to put them in and whatnot). He said that if you have a glasses prescription to bring that in. So, in short, you should be able to call and make an appointment no problem.

rottoncj --- 12 years ago -

Hey everyone I called the base hospital and YES they do contact exams as long as you currently ware contacts. I have an appointment next week. Just thought I would let everyone know

carlyrod --- 12 years ago -

Nice, thanks for sharing!

Which is what I already said since I asked my husband, who works in Optometry at the Naval Hospital...

She was just confirming what you said - no reason to get pissy. Just because you say your husband works in Optometry, doesn't mean anyone believes you or your husband.

Oh, you got me there.

I couldn't care less whether you believe me or not. Because obviously, lying about this would be so entertaining. You're an idiot.

AZbound --- 12 years ago -

someone needs a chill pill.....you're really fuming that someone didn't "take your word for it"?

I wouldn't have believed what you said either. I would rather take 2 minutes out of my day to pick up the phone and call myself to make positively sure than be misinformed by someone on the PU who just might not know how it works.

Even if you think with all your might that what you say was correct....it's very possible that you could have been wrong. lol

Fuming? Hardly, I'm not upset. I just think shizzle is an idiot...completely unrelated to this topic, s/he is, based off every rude and demeaning post she writes on these boards. Look at her posting history and you'll see she is not a nice person. Sure, what I said was rude to her, but that's because I'm tired of her rude comments constantly, generally speaking, not in relation to this.

And as for me not knowing how it works, you're absolutely correct, I don't know how it works. Which is why I asked my husband, the most competent Corpsman working in Optometry at the moment. Me asking my husband would be no different than calling, considering you'd be speaking to someone who works the department.

But I do believe you and Shizzle are blowing this way out of proportion. All I say is I had already stated what she said. No big deal. I don't think I'm the one who needs to take a "chill pill."

YouReallyThinkSo --- 12 years ago -

You keep replying back which keeps giving them fuel for the fire. Its the underground no one takes what people says seriously. A lot wives post that there husbands work in a certain area and they know whatever when in fact they dont know. Personally I like shizzle, they keep it interesting. Also I have called and was told its only for active duty so obviously it must depend on who you get.

I never claimed to know. I said I would ask, and then get back with the answer. I don't know the first thing about what he does in the different departments, nor do I claim to.

Heather --- 12 years ago -

ok so this may be a dumb question but i have eyeglasses and contacts can you do both exams at the hospital or only one i ask because i do have astigmatism which makes everything more expensive unfortunately

namenotalreadytaken --- 12 years ago -

Heather the glasses exam is part of the contacts exam. If that makes sense. They arent two seperate ones, contacts just have another step. So yes at the hospital when you go for contacts the glasses part will be done as well. Hope that helps
