My baby is 4months old this week and earlier last month it started to hurt when I would feed her on one side. After a few days it had gotten to the point where I could not stand the pain of her feeding on it. I called my doctors office, a nurse help line, a breastfeeding hot-line, even tried the naval ob and some friends. Finally figured it might be a milk bleb or so I thought. The next day it looked gross and it was red so I went to the ER and they informed me it was a breast infection. I took the pills and followed up with my doctor in two days that agreed that is was it was and pumped through the pain. I started to have her feed on that side again as the the pain died down but it never fully went away. I've been out of antibiotics since Thursday and the pain is slowly getting worse. I called my doctors office twice with no response back yet but I am beginning to think it was thrush not a breast infection. I know two different doctors said it was an infection but everything I read about thrush seem to fit better with my symptoms and the meds I was given for the infection doesn't seem to completely worked. Am I just being silly here or should a find another doctor to look at it?
Is there anyone reading this that has had both a breast infection and thrush at some point while breastfeeding? Please no drama I am just looking for someone who I can talk to that might be helpful. I have tried so many people including trying to find a lactation consultant with no luck.

Did they rule out mastitis or is that what they told you you had?

00m00 --- 13 years ago -

They said it was mastitis

I'll send you a PM.

I have anemia, have burning feeling while feeding sometimes and a shooting pain afterwards

Before the ER I had tiny blisters and it was all red, itchy, shooting burning pain but my doctor insisted it was mastitis and bacterial.

WIC has a breast feeding hotline that is amazing. You dont have to go through WIC to call either, I didnt have WIC and they helped me! Never had your problem but I would say the more professional advice the better. Good luck and hope you start to feel better

If you did have mastitis, the antibiotics could have actually given you thrush. I've gotten it before from antibiotics. I've battled through it with 2 of my 3 girls. You're welcome to pm if you have any questions. You can always call or visit a lactation consultant. They always confirm what I have before I go to the dr. That way I'm armed with a professional opinion.

your symptoms sound exactly like what i delt with and i had mastitis for about 2 months. went to the er the first time and they gave me antibiotics, started to go away so when i continued breastfeeding it came back about a week later. i suggest going back again, when i did i got a diff doctor, Dr. Chao who put me on MUCH stronger antibiotics. i had to pump and dump and formula feed but if u continue pumping your supply will continue. if your breast feels hard, it could be forming a mass and if you dont go back soon enough they might have to do surgery to remove it. i went once a week for about 2 months to do procedures to avoide surgery and it eventually completely went away! i suggest you ask for Dr. Chao if u can ( if you go to naval hospital). he was awesome and would fit me in during his lunch break or between surgeries if he could. hope you feel better soon!
