I am watching a baby story or one of those TLC shows, and they are constantly administering cytotec to these poor women to induce them... It can cause uterine rupture, because it makes contractions way too strong, and many women have died from this drug... So WHY STILL use it? It even says on the label not for use in pregnant women!

So please, if you are preggers, do not let them use this on you! And ask which medications they typically use for induction, etc, and ask to read the labels before you are ready to deliver!

Cytotec is also used to treat gastric ulcers produced by heavy use of NSAID pain relievers, and it is used to ABORT a pregnancy. It is VERY painful. Ridiculous.

Go Midwives!

Are cytotec and pitocin the same thing? I was induced and the put a little tab on my cervix (I forget what that was called) to start dilating me and then I was given pitocin.

Cytotec is a pill that is NOT intended for inducing labor but doctors use it anyway because it is so convienant for them. If you react badly there is nothing they can do to stop it like with pitocin where they can turn it off.

Almost 10 years later and I am still dealing with the effects of a tailbone broken in labor after I had hyper-uterine stimulation as a result of less than half a cytotec pill. You know what that feels like? Your next contraction starts before your last one ends and it hurts like heck. I've since given birth 3 more times, big difference. Luckily it doesn't do it to everyone, but it has huge risks and I'm lucky my uterus did not rupture.

Holy crap

YES Accountnickname that is exactly what I am talking about!! Some doctor do apply it in another form to the cervix to help dialate it. NOT GOOD.

It can cause uterine rupture, fetal distress, maternal distress, high heart rate, high blood pressure during labor, etc. etc. It's VERY risky. Pisses me off that docs still use it!

And It is not the same thing as pitocin, which is synthetic oxytocin, but behaves a little differently int he body. I don't care for pitocin either, but sometimes it's necessary and at least it's meant for use in induction.

Cytotec is applied directly to the cervix, and it is supposed to cause the cervix to dialate, causing a miscarriage (one of it's cited official uses, which is why it is not for use in pregnant women who want to STAY pregnant) and so when you are full term, a miscarriage is basically birth. but the way the drug works is totally different than your natural hormones. At least pitocin mimics your actual body's hormones.
