Ok question...

We just bought a car. We have insurance through our same agent back in Minnesota. Well we just got a notice from the CA Dmv saying we have no proof of insurance so they will suspend our car in a certain amount of days if we don't show proof. Well when i went online to do it, you have to have this NAIC number. Is that a California thing only? And since we are military i thought we could have our car insurance through back home still but is that not true if its registered in CALI?

Sorry that was long. Its all the dealerships fault it was supposed to be registered back in MN and us get MN plates
THANKS

CLLP --- 13 years ago -

My car is registered back in VA but we have California insurance. But I didn't buy it in CA.

OK so you switched your insurance when you moved out here?

awesomeamber --- 13 years ago -

When you move you are supposed to switch the insurance as well.

Northernpeach --- 13 years ago -

We were told your insurance stays in your home state. Like ours says minnesota insurance but has our cali address

puppylove --- 13 years ago -

Some states require your car be registered where it's insurered.
I think you have to insurance it in California and then transfer it to MN.
I know when we moved to MN we couldn't have our car insurered here since the cars are registered out of state. So everything is still registered and insurered in CA.

Northernpeach --- 13 years ago -

Oh boy.. Im so confused over this and our insurance agents office is already closed DANG IT!!!

awesomeamber --- 13 years ago -

Could be wrong I assumed it was based on what each state requires. I know our Jeep is registered in tx but USAA sent us a Tx card and Ca card.

ItchyWarden --- 13 years ago -

Had the same issue too. You have to have Cali insurance. The NAIC number is a Cali thing.

This is so annoying. The dealership told us we were paying for it to be in Minnesota.. Im frustrated for sure

CLLP --- 13 years ago -

I was told that it can stay registered in the state your from but it didn't make sense to keep insurance there because you are driving the car in CA so you would need insurance to cover you for CA accidents.

I believe you have to have California insurance. The insurance is based on the address the vehicle is actually parked at most of the time so using an address in another state would probably be fraudulent. Each state also has different laws regarding coverage amounts etc.

shizzlemydizzle --- 13 years ago -

If you have Cali plates, you need Cali insurance.

Your insurance has to match the state the plates are from.

shizzlemydizzle --- 13 years ago -

Yeah, and you do need to notify your insurance company if your car is registered in one state and being used in another for more than 30 days.

Yea the car can be registered to another state but on the insurance, the garaged address has to be the same state that its held at.

Ok well the address on our insurance card is our address here has our license number on there and the right vin for the car. Only thing is says up top is Mn insurance. My insurance guy knows our situation I'm just calling to make sure we are squared away so we don't get our car suspended

CLLP --- 13 years ago -

Yea I would double check with them and maybe you need to bring a form or document up to DMV to show them

Vod Kaknockers --- 13 years ago -

No you don't, what you have to have is the state min, for the state you car is registered in.

Like for us our truck is registered in TX but our insurance is through CA, with the TX min.

Apocalypse --- 13 years ago -

We had the worst luck with a CA registration. They suspended our registration for a year and didn't tell us. It was all over them not putting in our insurance when we bought the thing. We didn't have CA insurance nor did we switch to CA insurance. It ended up taking them months to get it fixed. We ended up just switching to our home state shortly after.

gurlplz --- 13 years ago -

We also have USAA and get 2 insurance forms. One from our state where the car is registered and the other Cali (garaging addr). I was told that is how it works.

YouReallyThinkSo --- 13 years ago -

You don't have to have CA insurance. Our old car was registered in CA and we had insurance from Minnesota. You just have to send in a copy of your insurance. If you can the CA DMV they can give you a fax number also. It's not hard.

YouReallyThinkSo --- 13 years ago -

I got a notice about our registration too. It was all fixed in less than a week.

YouReallyThinkSo --- 13 years ago -

Northern also you should call the Minnesota motor vehicles department, I forget what they call it. But as long as you are active duty you can register it in MN for free. You can do it by mail. We bought 2 vehicles in CA and registered them in MN and only paid 6 bucks for the plate fee. It will save you a ton of money.

2Gems4Ever --- 13 years ago -

FYI most of the time other states have a higher min than CA, which is always better IMO. We moved to NC and in order to register our cars on base we had to up/change our coverage to NC because CA was lower. We have CA plates and NC insurance coverage. However, we have 6 months to switch our tags to NC to keep our policy the way it is. At first we just up out coverage with CA insurance and we were paying $800 more than what we are paying now for a 6 month premium.

Wisconsin Sarah --- 13 years ago -

Ours was KIND OF similar to GEM ...

We have both of our cars licensed in WI ... but had NC insurance through GEICO because our old policy didnt cover NC ...
When we moved to CA we called GEICO to let them know we moved and our rate tripled and our coverage was worse lol because CA minimums are lower.
I called a new agent home in WI and he said that they could cover us in CA with WI insurance. Our rate was WAY WAY WAY less than even our NC rate and our coverage was about 1000 times more than CA even required.

As long as you are meeting the CA minimums I dont see the issue ...

Long story short: We live in CA ... both of our cars are licensed/registered/insured through WI

Wisconsin Sarah --- 13 years ago -

When I noted I called a new agent - I meant we dropped shady GEICO for FARMERS

2Gems4Ever --- 13 years ago -

WS exactly. Therefore, you can have Cali tags and be insured in your home state. CA insurance def was HIGH with less coverage than any other state. We have USAA.

3Kleebs --- 13 years ago -

All I know is....

We have both our vehicles registered in NC. We have USAA and have NC insurance, but through our CA address. I hope that makes sense.

puppylove --- 13 years ago -

That's how ours is too. But we have Cali plates, Cali insurance with our MN address because we can't have MN insurance without changing the plates to MN. Each state is different with what you have to do call the CA DMV and ask them what you have to do

AmyLostInNC --- 13 years ago -

We have California Plates and California Insurance but with the North Carolina minimum requirements. I might register the car in NC next year though.

On a different note I just got my DL renewwl and they put my NC address on a CA license! I thought it was cool lol
