I'm having my gallbladder out on monday and its my first surgery so im nervous about the whole ordeal...mostly the anesthesia and recovery part, dont like losing control of myself and handing it over to the naval hospital, lol..if i could do it under a spinal i would...

so anyways...just curious to hear everybodies else surgery stories, the good the bad and the ugly :)

I had a radical trachelectomy- it's a surgery for cancer. I was scared to death and the night before I wrote letters to my family because I was sure I was going to die, lol. I also packed a plastic container filled with baby wipes, chapstick, wisps, sanitized, deodorant, and perfume. I knew I was going to be lifted and touched by nurses so those hygiene things were important and I used them all. And I put my hair in a French braid so it wouldn't get matted.... Those vanity items aside... I was scared to death and knew I was going to be opened and sliced and I was scared of waking up during surgery and the pain... But literally the hardest part is preparing to be put under... Just realize if you can control your stress. Up until the minute they put you under you will have won half the battle. Remember there is a trained professional monitoring your anesthesia at all times... And once they begin to put you under you'll feel dizzy and the next thing you'll experience is, "hi _____, surgery's over, you did great!" and then some nice nurses will come in every few hours and dope you up! Remember that each day will get better... I was put under for 8 hours and had to learn how to walk again after surgery... Now 9 months later I dread going to the gym- I healed so nicely I take things for granted again, lol. You'll do great... Battling your nerves is the hardest part, and that's all mental... Good luck :)

thanks Dozie, Im sorry you had to experience that and it makes me realize that there are so much worse things in the world than my 60 min lap chole lol.
Im glad you are doing well!

Oh lord, you're going to be just fine! What you're having done is so so common! :) You will do great! I downloaded a meditation on my iPod called Preparation for a successful surgery, and listened to it a few nights before my surgery... Maybe that could help relax you? :)

I had my gallbladder taken out by lap.. I'm sure its the same procedure... You will be sore for a couple days and that's it... Very small incessions sp?_ you will be fine just remember before you eat anything greasy.... Make sure there's a bathroom around. Tmi but it will go right through you.. good luck

i also had my gall bladder removed by naval- but in lejeune. It wasnt as bad. If it's by lap, the scarring is very minimal...i have 4-5 little horizontal scars approx 1/2 inch long...was in the hosp. for 4 days( it was emergency surgery)- consider it a mini vacation from your hubby and house work.lol. you should be fine though...but def be wary of greasy foods after. bc the gall bladder helps regulate the amount of bile produced by the liver to aid in digestion, so things will process through you very quick. good luck.

x2 on everything lol the bathroom part sucks :( Healing doesnt take long. My sister and I have both had our gallbladders removed and my sister was holding my daughter and walking up a street to check the mail the next day.

I've had 6 abdominal surgeries, for another reason... but I was reading your orginal post and the one thing I would never do is put my life in the hands of the Naval Hospital! LOL Good luck, hope you feel better soon. Don't worry too much it will be over before you know it!
