Loved it! Not for everyone though. Slower pace of life and much much smaller community. If you like the slow life you will like it. We were at Lejeune for 3.5 years and it really grows on you.
we were at seymour afb/goldsboro (my hubby is AF) and i loved it - not so much the area or town (although i love the slower pace/small town feel) but i was so close to hubbys folks, Raleigh, VA and the beach wasnt too far away
i was kinda thinking for when the hubby gets out ...i have heard housing is super affordable and that I would be able to get a pretty good job out there hubby would be in school
and that I would be able to get a pretty good job out there
I guess that depends on your definition of a "good job." I have a degree from a well-respected university and a very strong career history, and it took me 6 months to find a job that paid less than I was making at my first job out of college. I was actually advised by the employment agency to "dumb down" my resume. It's very backwards out there.
eta: This is only in regards to the Lejeune area. I'm sure in larger cities, the job markets are better. A friend of mine from college has a really awesome job with IBM in Raleigh.
I'm from there Cherry Point, and visiting family while hubby is deployed. I hate NC, born and raised in CA and love all the things do do. We definitely live financially better in NC but jobs are limited depending on what you do.
I live in NC. I love it more than when I lived in CA. Its like two different worlds. I live right in the middle of NC so we are not too far from the mountains and not too far from the beach. The cost of living is pretty low. Its really personal preference in what kind of atmosphere and living you are use to or like
The mountains are pretty. We spent one Christmas at a cabin outside of Asheville. It was so pretty. Nothing like the Sierras or Rockies, but still beautiful.
6 months!that sucks! I know it would not take me that long we would not be right by the base ... I have ex co workers out there that will help direct me so i am not to worried about my finding a job ...
does anyone own a house out there ? just wondering what they go for...
I Love NC!!!! Hahaha but really I do, born and raised and my husband just got stationed here. Cali was okay in my eyes but with me not finding a job in a very demanding career really made me want to leave more and more each day. My husband was able to choose a duty station therefore he chose our home state so I could have a better chance.
We are actually in the process of closing on a house in New Bern. The housing prices for a 3 bedroom 2 bath that I've seen while we were searching ranged from 138,000 to 189,000. The cost of living is way cheaper than Cali and IMO you get more for your buck.
Yep, the housing market is pretty cheap there. You can get a nice 3 bed 2 bath for approx $150,000 and you might be able to get a new build for that too.
I would leave first thing in the morning to head back there if I could! I miss NC like crazy! We were at Cherry Point, and lived in New Bern. My husband is from New Bern. I cried when we left. This is our 3rd duty station, and that was the first time I cried leaving an area. I've got my fingers crossed that when orders are up in 2yrs, we can go back to Cherry Point. I want my house back!!!!
