I have to change to a low to no diary, low to no gluten, and no red meat diet. He really suggested no diary or gluten at all, but I don't think I'll be able to cut both out totally.

So my questions are:

What do you like better almond or soy milk? Which is better for you?

Any good sites or anything for me to get more information on eating low to no gluten? I've googled info, but I figured someone here might know some more info. TIA

There is a really great vanilla soy milk at costco. The vanilla gives it a good flavor. I used to give it to my kids in their cereal.

Viva, also start shopping at fresh and easy. There are several products there that are gluten free, and they are clearly marked on the packaging. It might help a little bit with learning new ways to eat :)

Almond Milk is better for you in the long term. There have been studies on the negative effects of the phytoestrogens from the soy beans in the soy milk done that are worth looking into.

Amazon.com has some great prices on gluten-free products. Henry's has a great selection as well. Costco carries almond milk in bulk for cheaper than buying it by the quart in regular stores.

I buy it all... organic soy, organic regular, coconut and almond. haha The only one I don't buy is rice milk, as it's not nearly as nutritious as the others. I mainly use regulary dairy milk or the lactose free kind for cooking/baking. I use them all, especially coconut, for smoothies. I use almond and organic soy in my cereal.

They don't all stack up the same. I like soy or regular milk because they're so high in calcium. I like almond because it's very low cal. Etc.

Thank you! I was given a list of what I can't eat, but nothing on what I can eat or anything. I need to eat foods lower in fat and watch my cholesterol as well. Basically they want me to stay away from what is considered inflammatory foods, lower my cholesterol, no alcohol, and lose weight. That hopefully will help with my arthritis and help prevent me from having a full stroke. Hopefully I get to the specialist I need to soon so I can get more information and the medications I need. For now at least I want to do what I can for myself and hope it helps.

Mike Tyson says going vegan really helped his arthritis lol I just watched him on Ellen yesterday.

Yep. I usually go with almond milk...the unsweetened one. I have also made it myself.

There have also been studies that suggest milk actually leaches calcium from your bones. If you are worried about calcium just get it from plant sources. Dairy really isn't that great for you anyways.

My guilty pleasure is choco sot milk. But I would go with almond milk since unfermented soy is not good for you at all. :c

soy

grantsmommy --- 14 years ago -

there is a whole section of gluten free when you first go into the produce section at the commissary. its by the protein bars.

You can buy fermented or unfermented dairy products.. that includes soy but also regular milk and yogurt. So for those of you who don't do soy thats not fermented, do you void it in other things?

I only buy organic soy milk so that it's not genetically modified. Course, GM soy is in like 60% of processed foods so it's hard to completely avoid. I would really like to see it banned here.

I'm on the fence with the whole soy milk. I don't drink it every day and the reason I started buying other milks is because of all I've read/heard about unfermented soy and the harm it can do.

I'm not anti regular milk but because it's pasteurized here, I think it loses most of its nutrients vs raw milk which still has them.

I bet people 50 years ago did not think milk would ever be this complicated lol

Exactly! When I do get regular milk we buy raw. You can get it at Henry's and some other small mom and pop health stores.

And Yes I do try and avoid most boxed/processed things. There is soy and corn in almost everything!

My sister is gluten free and she gets most of her food at trader joes and Hendrys. At henrys it is clearly marked on the shelf. Traders is not as expensive though. She eats a lot of fish and vegetables. They have this kick assS chocolate cake and frosting that is gluten free, can't even taste the difference!

Absolutely. My niece has a severe soy allergy now thanks to drinking soy milk as a kid. Have you ever tried to eat soy free? It's nearly impossible. She has lots of side effects now from large doses of soy, the effects were so bad they thought she had Cystic Fibrosis.

Well that's no good:( You can totally eat soy free, but it wouldnt be easy for most people these days because off all the processed crap people are used to.

Yeah, she was 9 months old when they found the allergy (by doing an allergy panel) and the transition was hard when she started eating table foods. So many things are "fortified" with soy, which really is just added as a filler. She's 3 now and is in a 2T clothes because she can't eat soy, and WON'T eat a lot of the things she can.

Poor baby:( Well hopefully as she gets older it will be easier for her and she can find whole/natural foods she likes. She's just in that normal kid picky stage but I am sure she'll grow to like other things.

Exactly, that's what makes it harder for her. She was a high risk pregnancy so she also had to have hormone growth injections to mature her lungs in case she was born preemie (her brother was born at 24 weeks.) So she also has to eat all hormone free foods because the effect of the shots caused her to start growing breast tissue at 18 months old.

:( Well at least she will be healthier in the long run because of her allergy. We eat hormone free meats and dairy(when we have it) because of all the nasty hormones and antibitics.
