I have a small Chihuahua he is a year old.He was the perfect dog at 1st went to the bathroom outside no issues. Then all of a sudden he refuses to go to the bathroom outside. He is now marking one spot in my house.I went to pet smart and got a bottle of NO MARK to break him from marking in that one spot.I take him outside every hour, when he marks that spot I show him,say no and I put him in his kennel for a 10 min time out.ANY idea's??? Im about to rip my hair out.

mandi1562 --- 14 years ago -

Well one thing you never put the dog in his crate when he is in trouble. If that is his safe spot meaning you put him in there when you leave or for bed or whatever you don't put him in there when he is in trouble. That's a big no.
You put the dog outside when he is in trouble. Try taking the dog for a walk every hour instead. My dog doesn't like the back yard very much he will use it but he likes going on walks better.

Also has anything changed in his/your life when his problem started?

maybe its the weather?? its been off for a while

I dont have a backyard : ( He was never like this I dont know what is going with him.I was told by a vet to put him in there for a time out no longer then 10 mins.I feel so dumb right now because I dont know what I can do to stop this?

The only I can think of is us moving to a new place? I wonder if he can smell another pet was in here?

Canine Commander --- 14 years ago -

This is what I recommend to my clients who have potty issues.

1. Since he hasn't had any issues with toileting until recently, have him checked by a vet for urinary problems.

2. Has anything changed in the household routine?

3. Get him on a more regular toileting routine, and monitor him to make sure he's pottied. Don't assume he went just because he was outside for 10 minutes or more.

4. Use a solution of 2 parts white vinegar, 2 parts hydrogen peroxide and 1 part tap water to clean the spot he's urinating at. Sometimes commercial cleaners can leave behind an odor that will continue to mark that spot, and the solution I use completely removes any odor, proteins and stain.

5. Don't allow him unsupervised time in the house. If you cannot keep an eye on him 100% of the time, put him in his kennel.

6. DO NOT USE THE CRATE FOR PUNISHMENT. Most dog owners equate putting the dog in the crate to grounding a child, but it doesn't work that way. The crate is their bed and their safe place, you want all associations with the crate to be positive, using it as a punishment, when they're already frightened because you're mad and they don't quite understand why, will only make them fear the crate.

7. If he does urinate inside, do not rub his nose in it, do not spank him, just pick him up and put him outside, then clean up the spot. Ignore him for a good 5-15 minutes (no longer than 15 minutes, otherwise he'll forget what made you ignore him) while you clean up the spot. Then allow him back inside, but either tuck him into his crate or keep him always within eyesight.

8. If you're fortunate enough to catch him in the act, a loud "NO!", "BAD DOG!" or a sharp clap of your hands to interrupt the eliminating will get the message across that he just did something unacceptable.

9. When you take him outside, watch for him to eliminate. As soon as he's done going potty, give him a treat and/or effusive praise. You want him to learn that going potty outside is rewarding while going potty inside only results in him being shunned, which he doesn't like.

10. Be patient. If there isn't anything medically wrong with him, you will essentially have to re-potty train him, and it will take time. But, since he already knows the basics, it shouldn't take as long as it initially did.

You grab a newspaper, roll it up good and tight, raise it over your head and....

SMACK IT OVER YOUR OWN HEAD saying "BAD OWNER, BAD OWNER!"

If your dog is marking a spot in your house he/she is doing it because YOU aren't watching your dog and allowing it too much freedom. You can only correct a dog while it's in the process of doing something wrong after-the-fact doesn't work.

mandi1562 --- 14 years ago -

I've never been told to put a dog in the crate to punish no matter what the dog did. If you do that the dog will learn to hate the crate and it could make things so much worse.

I would try cleaning the carpets in your place, and taking me out in the morning, after eating, and before bed. Probably more times then that since he is having that problem. But once he stops have a set time that he goes out.

mandi1562 --- 14 years ago -

Donny I don't think that needed to be said. She is asking for help and doing the right thing by asking for help. You don't need to make her feel bad for trying to get help.

The only I can think of is us moving to a new place? I wonder if he can smell another pet was in here?

That is the reason there.

My little guy did the same thing when we first brought him home. He was terrified of going outside. The previous owners had no problem with him & he was fully housebroken. After maybe 2 weeks once he was comfortable he got the hang of it again.

I did reward him with a treat every time he went outside, it helped.

mandi1562 --- 14 years ago -

Oh my trainer also told me never let the dog see you clean up the mess they made whether isn't poo, pee, or chewed something they weren't suppose to. Put this somewhere either outside or where they can't see you clean it up.

Donny --- 14 years ago -

Donny I don't think that needed to be said. She is asking for help and doing the right thing by asking for help. You don't need to make her feel bad for trying to get help.

That actually was help, ask a trainer.

Any trainer will tell you if a dog is doing something wrong and you aren't catching it in the act of doing so you are allowing the dog too much freedom, more freedom then the dog is ready for. You have to catch a dog in the act of doing something wrong to correct it.

By freedom i mean it sounds like her dog is not ready to go out of eye sight from her otherwise it goes to the bathroom before she realizes it.

I just relayed that information in a more expressive/funny way.

Sorry if your e-feelings got hurt, my sarcasm font is broken. ;)

yea that's true donny But "You grab a newspaper, roll it up good and tight, raise it over your head and....SMACK IT OVER YOUR OWN HEAD saying "BAD OWNER, BAD OWNER!"" not ok.

Not okay? bwhahaha! The humor of that must have gone over your head, it's okay though the message was clear.

*Sweet M*Tsk Tsk --- 14 years ago -

Everyone who actually gave me advice thank you I will try something new.

*Sweet M*Tsk Tsk --- 14 years ago -

FYI my dog is always up my a&& I can not leave his eye sight or he is crying running after me.I catch him as he is about to do it.A bad owner wouldnt be asking for advice or open minded to trying something new for their animal,I would just keep him in his kennel, outside or I would get rid of him and I havent done or thought to do any of those. You didnt hurt my feelings because I know what kind of owner I am.

Donny --- 14 years ago -

Okay obviously sarcasm isn't working for you so i will break it down simpleton style.

when he marks that spot I show him

you show him after the fact, too late the dog by then has no idea what you are doing and doesn't even remember it went to the bathroom there.

I put him in his kennel for a 10 min time out

Really? Time out??? NEWS FLASH dogs don't have human emotions so stop trying to treat the dog like a human.

Dogs are pack animals and it sounds like your dog has no idea who the pack leader is in your house (i wonder why).

You posted asking for help, bad owner? no, but you obviously don't know how to train a dog so it doesn't make you BESTUS OWNER OF THE YEAR either. (that was sarcasm again).

Invest in dog training or switch out the carpet for wood floors. (sarcasm again).

sheesh everyone is so sensitive today!

lol, maybe try explaining that with smaller words. Her profile reads

" I am a cake decorate who lives on camp pendleton."

mandi1562 --- 14 years ago -

Wow because I"m not a b**** to people when they ask for help you're going to be an rude to me. I'm sorry if I don't want the world of PU to know every little thing about me. I went to school for baking and pastry arts, I work in bakery and I live on camp pendleton. So go to H*ll.

Colonel LizZoo --- 14 years ago -

Ummm, Mandi? It's cake decorator. That's why it was funny.

mandi1562 --- 14 years ago -

I don't care, that's he was rude before that. That's the point. I know how my profile is written. Thank you.

Yes, I thought copy and paste was self explanatory. I will type louder and slower now. Just nod and smile if you don't understand.

Well, sorry. Geez! I was trying to point out that it was a typo (and wasn't being rude). But since you know it is wrong and would rather keep it thereby making yourself look less intelligent, by all means, go ahead.
