I miss it! It was hot and yuck, but other than the weather I liked being there. It was nice and slow living. There wasn't a whole lot to do right in 29 Palms, but we spent a lot of time playing with the kids, the kids were involved in sports and almost every weekend we'd go to the drive in. So much fun!! I didn't shop very much due to the lack of shopping, which was good. It really was a lot of fun. The weather here ROCKS, but the quality family time there was so nice.
We lived there for 3 years. We lived in Marine Palms, it was nice newer housing. As for things to do, theres not much close by. You have to drive to get anywhere. My daughter went to Condor Elementary, and it was a good school.
Oh, the housing wasn't too bad where we lived and the kids went to school right down the street (well it was just my oldest at the time). The school was great, my daughter's 2nd grade teacher was the one who pushed for her to be tested for GATE in 3rd grade. She recognized that she was smart and not just a little pain in the butt lol

Sounds like our kind of place!
The sucky part is the deployment right away even though he will have just gotten home, the fact that we own a house 2 hours from there, the fact that I'm in college, and the wonderful school my kids have where none of the schools up there are rated as highly.
We have no idea what we will do about our house, this was very unexpected. I guess we would have to rent it out. :(

That is true, but they are still really great schools!! I am pretty picky about the schools my kids go to and I was really happy with Condor on base. My oldest went to school both out in town to 29 Palms elementary and on base to Condor and I liked both schools. 29 Elementary is where the kids on the other side of base go to and Condor is where the kids on the commissary side of base go (unless it has changed in the last couple of years). You should definitely rent your house out. I wouldn't sell it. It sounds like a very smart investment anyway.

Gotta love the Marine Corps! :( I think you guys will like it. There is a lot to do for the kids as far as sports.
I personally suggest living on base and having your kids go to Condor, which is the base school. I was there for three years, the school was good and my friends whose kids went out in town hated the schools. also i know people that live in hemet temecula that own houses and commute to 29 palms. they have a lot of activities for the families on base, nothing out in town. i drove over an hour to go to target because i hate walmart! the drive in was great, and the movie theater on base is awesome. i hated living there, but looking back it was not that bad.

Our BAH would drop by almost $1000 per month, we couldn't pay our mortgage with that PLUS he'd be driving for about 4 1/2 hours each day and we'd have to pay for that gas. No thanks, lol
yeah the bah sucks out there!! the people i know that commute g o bachelor it and come home on the weekends, and also i was told you can put in some sort of request to keep your bah at the san diego level if you moved from there and you are going to continue living there.

I agree. Just find a good property management company to handle it for you. You'll probably end up making money by renting. I don't know what your mortgage payment is, but a house identical to ours across the street just rented for $800 over what we pay for our mortgage!
omg that is crazy mytracker!!! do you live on the east side of los alamos?
Yes. Walking distance to the sports park. I can see the lights from our back yard.
Do you ever go walking over there?
I just did yesterday morning. :)
I go once or twice a week with my son and sometimes with our playgroup.
It's so nice there now that the weather has turned.
The stinky parts about renting out our house and that we will hate giving up such a big house and all plus we spent like 20k doing the yard plus we had all new carpets put it, bought expensive appliances, ect. I would hate for any of it to be ruined by a renter :( Better than the alternative financial problem I guess.
we will hate giving up such a big house and all
Yea, you will definitely be in a smaller, older place on base :( I hate that you are having to leave your house. On the other hand, like docswife said, maybe your husband can look into having a waiver for the BAH if you stay in the house and have him be a geo bachelor on base until he gets back from deployment at least? Good luck! The Marine Corps never likes to cooperate with plans lol

That might be an idea, it would at least keep my kids in school here and me at my college longer. I couldn't do it after he was back though, I don't want to be away from my hubs. I've already spent enough time away from him.
docswfie - yes we are in the Temecula area.
I just moved from there! We were there for 4 years,IT IS FREAKIN HOTT!!!I suggest u live in base housing. My kids do miss it there and it is a small community and I made awsome friends there(Docs wifie)When we wanted to escape from there we would drive an hour away to Palm Desert where there was a mall and alot of stores. There is a Wllyworld and a Starbucks 30 mins away....I do miss it there
MCwifeMOMx3 - What rank if you dont mind my asking? The adobe flats houses are SUPER NICE and they go up to SSGT. I'd definately take one of those. My aunt is a teacher at Condor, and I'd choose it over the school out in town. I graduated high school in the area, but I went to a private school. The public high school was scary.
ohh lawd corinna can back me up on the crazy skanks that were there when we were, it is definitely entertaining out in the desert.....

Aww, I miss 29. Hubby was there for 6 years and I was there for 2 but I'm originally from Palm Springs. We loved it there. Yeah it got hot but we had A/C. And even though lots of people will say there's nothing to do there really is. You just gotta get out and find it.
Oh and when you get there you have to go to Laura's Cafe. It's yummy, and cheap. And has their famous Atomic Hot sauce. So hot you have to sign a waiver to get it.

How long ago were you guys there?
